Try giving him other things, you'll never what's his favourite unless you let him try a little of everything. And how on earth are you going to train a gerbil!?! I'd love to know how!! :P
Help my gerbil, Peanut does not like sun flower seeds now i cant train it because he does not have a favorite?
Don't try to give it too many sun flower seeds. They will get gas becuase sun flower seeds are very fatty for little Gerbils.
Try giving it fruit and fresh veggies:
Appels
Lettuce
Carrots
Oatmeal
Exmeriment with your pet!!! Hope this helps! Have fun!
Reply:That is really odd for a gerbil to not like sunflower seeds! If the gerbil can't open sunflower seeds, that might be the sign of a tooth problem. If he still chews on cardboard just fine, then he's probably OK, but if he looks like he's having trouble chewing then you should take him to a vet. Does he still have an appetite for the rest of his food? If he doesn't want to eat anything and he loses weight, he should see a vet. But maybe he just doesn't like sunflower seeds very much, and that's OK too. There are a lot of other tasty things for gerbils to eat. It is correct that you should not give the gerbil too many sunflower seeds, but I have never heard of a gerbil getting gas. The gerbil will just get fat, and that is obviously not healthy. In fact, many gerbil owners remove the sunflower seeds from their storebought food so that the gerbils don't become overweight.
A lot of gerbil owners use plain cheerios for gerbil treats. My gerbils love them and they aren't fatty like sunflower seeds. Pumpkin seeds are also popular with my gerbils, but they are more fatty than cheerios. You can also give them fresh things as occasional treats as long as you make sure that you don't leave the remainder left to rot in the bottom of the cage when the gerbil is finished. A small portion of lettuce, carrot, strawberry, blueberry, peach, raspberry, blackberry, apple, broccoli, green pepper, etc. is usually a big hit. If you want a small incentive for training purposes, you could also try some kashi cereal. There is a kind they make with a bunch of puffed grains that is unsweetened, and they enjoy that a lot as well.
There is a yahoo group for gerbil owners. http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/AGSge...
You will get quicker and much more informed answers to your gerbil questions if you join the group and post them there. Good luck!
