Some of the flowers seeds sown straight into the ground end of May have not yet germinated?

I suspect the cold and persist rain is to blame. Can I say goodbye to them ever germinating this summer?. Zinnas and Cosmos seeds were sown never germinated whilst cornflowers and others seeds have germinated.

Some of the flowers seeds sown straight into the ground end of May have not yet germinated?
Some Zinnias take 5-7 days to germinate, other varieties can take 7-10 days when temperatures are at 70 degrees.

http://www.yankeegardener.com/seeds/hart...

Cosmos plants will germinate in 7 - 21 days when the soil temperature is optimum for germination at 70 - 80 degrees F.

" If the early spring has been cold, soil temperatures will remain cool also. If the soil temperature is below 65 F., seeds may not germinate as rapidly."

http://plantanswers.tamu.edu/flowers/cos...

If you have had at least 70 degree temperature (for the time required to germinate) %26amp; your other flowers with similar temperature requirements have germinated, your Zinnia %26amp; Cosmos seeds should have also germinated by now. Maybe you got some bad seeds. You can see if you can get a refund or replacement. Zinnia seed may be sown up until the end of July.

Keep in mind that Cornflowers start germinating at a lower temperature, so it's reasonable to assume that they can germinate earlier than Cosmos:

Cornflower/Bachelor's Button ... Germination: 7-25 days. Optimum soil temperature for germination: 60-70F. Sowing depth: 1/8"

Good luck!!! Hope this helps.
Reply:Yes, they still might germinate.

Thanks for letting me know the info was helpful.

Good luck...fingers crossed :) Report It

Reply:There's also a possibility that the seeds could have been carried by the rains further from where you planted them. Wouldn't it be a surprise to find them popping up where you didn't expect them?? Report It

Reply:yep you right bout cold and rain,,,if you happen to have planted them too deep,,the rain packed the dirt so hard ,,that they can not push thru,,,,also cool or cold weather makes the ground too cold for them to germinate,,,,,,the Zinnas and Cosmos seeds are way smaller than Cornflowers and etc,,,so they only did bout 1/8 inch of coverage,,,i sow mine on top of ground,,then press them in with a garden rake,,,i do not put dirt on em,,,,
Reply:If you kept the packet it should have some form of germination guarantee on it. Take the packet back to where you bought it anyway as if no one does the problem of duff seeds never come to light.

Where is the best place to buy seeds?

I'm looking for a common, easily accessible store to purchase flower seeds for home growing.

Where is the best place to buy seeds?
Lowes or Home Depo, Westlake Hardware or even Wal-Mart.
Reply:walmart
Reply:You can find common and easy to grow flowers online too.

It is a nursery. http://pjnursery.cblinkenterprise.com
Reply:I've bought from Burpee by mail and have found that the less expensive brands carried by Walmart (often under the Burpee name, too) are just as good. For bulk seed go to an Ace Hardware store, or try a farmstore. If you're wanting to grow a large garden, bulk is the way to go.

By the way, I think it's probably too late to start flowers. Get a headstart by ordering as many catalogs as you can find, then pore over them this winter, write down the types you want, and buy them at Walmart.

Depending on where you live, start them early inside-some can be sown outside after all danger of frost is gone, but I find that I lose more seed that way, they don't come up or get lost in the weeds.

Reply:home depot ,wellen cullens,hardware store,agricultural warehouse
Reply:I buy them on ebay.. they are cheep and usually come in bulk.. plus there are a lot of unique plants and flowers that are hard to find in the stores!!
Reply:The best place to buy common seed is places like Walmart and Lowes. the only problem being that these box stores have already returned their seed for the year. they usually do this sometime in june. If you have a local garden center, they may keep there seeds in stock a little longer. If all else fails and your just itching to buy some seeds now shop on the internet. You can always buy from ferry morse. They have a website that is always 40% off. Park seed is also a good site. You can go to their website as well as many others and sign up for their catalogs and newsletters. You will also get notices of internet sales. Thompson morgan carries common seeds as well as many not so common. They have a sale going on now with all seeds being 50% off. Offer lasts unitl July 2nd. Like someone said if you want to wait until next year order all those catalogs. If you wanna plant before order you some herbs or perennials that you can start now or in the fall. Good luck with your garden.
Reply:I always buy mine from a nursery, because they have people who know a lot about flowers that can help you.

Where can I find pricing about Menard's product ?Seed in a blanket? - peat moss sheet containin flower seeds

You can make your own, too. Using paper towels, a light glue and water mixture and your seeds, you can cut strips of the paper towels, dampen them, add your seeds and seal the edges shut with the glue mixture. The paper towels break down and the seeds germinate through them.

How do you go about germinating seeds?

I've spontaneously bought some fancy-shmancy exotic flower seeds and have NO IDEA how to get them started.

I'm good with succulents, which can be tempermental (despite being low maintenance plants), so I know I can take care of something, I just don't know how to "germinate" something from seed.

Help!

How do you go about germinating seeds?
Well, you can either buy some peat cells (2-3 seeds per cell...they come with instructions) or you can just get some plastic potting containers and some seed starting mix. Fill the containers with the mix and then sow the seed. Read the directions on the back of the packages as to how far to insert the seed into the soil (if it does not say how far to insert the seed then it is usually 2x the width of the seed) If they are tiny like poppy seeds then you just sprinkle them on top of the soil surface). Keep the soil moist and in bright light until they are ready to go into the garden. At some point you may need to thin out your seedlings if they are planted to close together. Just pinch out the weaker looking seedlings so that the stronger ones have more room to grow.
Reply:It depends on the seed. If you bought good seeds, planting insruction should be on the packet. You can find on the internet how to germinate any seed by going to search and putting in "how to plant......." Some seeds need to be striated which means to plant them and put them in the refrigerator for awhile. Some seeds have to have the exposure to the cold and then made warm to sprout. Some seeds require the cold treatment and then must have light to germinate (chamomile for one) Some seeds can just be soaked overnight to help break the seed coat (sweet peas). Some seeds need to have the seed coat nicked. Best advice, go the How To search and you should get the answer to your question.
Reply:Hi:

It is not hard to germinate seeds if you take the right steps. The key to germinating many types of seeds is to purchase a light weight potting soil. (no bark) Add some vermiculite and some humus to the soil. The real key is to add hot water to the soil mixture. This gives your seeds a great start to the germination process. Make sure you water properly but don't over water them. Also, make sure you have the right light requirements. Some plants require light to geminate and some require darkness. Following these steps should produce good healthy plants.

I will link you to the spice and herb section of my website. I have a page on herb growing from seed and this explains the germination process more in detail. I have grown over 5,000 seedling in a greenhouse and also indoors. This is a good way to germinate.

I will also link you to the site map as this has everything that is on the website. Browse through and see if you can find any other information that may be helpful to you. Good luck to you and if you need any further help with seed germination or any other landscape project, please feel free to contact me at the website. Have a great day!

In which part of the flower are seeds formed?

The flower is the sexual reproductive part of an angiosperm. It consists of four whorls of modified leaves : sepals, petals, stamens and carpals. The stamens are the male reproductive parts which includes the sporangia that produces pollen. The carpals are the female reproductive parts and includes the sporangia that produces the egg.

Pollen Development:

A pollen grain is an immature male gametophyte.

It is produced within the sporangium of the anthers.

The diploid microspore mother cell will undergo meiosis and form 4 haploid microspores.

The microspores nuclei will undergo mitosis and produce a tube nucleus and a generative nucleus.

A thick wall forms around the spore in a specific pattern, producing the pollen grain or immature male gametophyte.

Ovule Development:

The ovule is an immature seed. It is formed within the ovary and contains the female gametophyte.

The female gametophyte is the embryo sac and forms in the following way.

The megaspore mother cell undergoes meiosis to form 4 haploid (N) megaspores.

One of the 4 will continue to develop, while the other 3 dissolve.

The remaining megaspore grows and its nucleus will undergo 3 mitotic divisions, forming 1 large cell with 8 haploid nuclei.

This will develop into the embryo sac. This sac contains a specific arrangement of these nuclei in the following order: The egg cell is located near the micropyle surrounded by 2 other cells called synergids. At the opposite end 3 antipodal cells are found. In the center of the sac will be found 2 polar nuclei.

Pollination:

Pollination is the placement of the pollen on the stigma of the carpal. This pollen transfer can be accomplished by wind, insects, built in mechanical discharge, and man. Once the pollen lands on the stigma, a series of chemical reactions takes place allowing the pollen grain to begin producing a structure called the pollen tube. As this is happening, the generative nucleus will divide and produce 2 sperm nuclei. This pollen grain with the pollen tube and 3 nuclei is considered the mature gametophyte. The pollen tube will work its way through the style of the carpal and touch the micropyle of the ovule. Here the sperm nuclei will enter the embryo sac and fertilize the egg and the two polar nuclei; hence the term double fertilization. The fertilized egg (2N) will develop into the immature seed plant, while the (3N) central cell will develop into the endosperm or food storage area of the seed.

ovary
Reply:In the gynaeceum, the bottle shaped structure in the inner base of flowers, it contains the ovules and it has a stigma, tube like structure where polen grains land and develop the male nucleus that disolve stigma structure in a rece to reach ovules, just like in mammals sperm seeks ovules. First to reach an ovule, gets to form a new seed.
Reply:i don't think flowers have seeds...
Reply:Seeds are formed from the fertilized ovules in the ovary of the flower. But note that in a very small number of species seeds can form apomictically without fertilization ... Taraxacum is a well-known example.

It was this carpet carrying flower seeds advertized on tv i wanted to kno where can i get it from?

It looks so easy. In the end, this will be some of the most expensive seed you will ever buy. For the same money, you can get enough seed to plant several times the area. Keep in mind that there is more to it than just unrolling the "seed carpet" on the ground and sprinkling it with a little water.

The places the unroll it on TV have been carefully prepared. In real life, it is not that simple. You will need to get rid of any weeds or grass and work the soil before you lay down the carpet. The carpet must make firm contact with friable soil and must be kept damp. If you do not do these things, most of the seeds will not germinate, and those that do will quickly die before the roots can reach the soil beneath and get established.

Of course, this is just my opinion. I just hate to see people get ripped off by TV infomercials.

For what it is worth, they are available at WalMart and the like.

Good luck with your gardening.

Is it too late to plant seeds for flowers???

first off thanks to all of you that answered my tomatoe question, I really appreciate it! Now I am just wondering if it is too late in the season to plant flower seeds, I ordered roll n grow seeds 2 months ago and just now recieved them- and am curious if it would just be a waste of time to plant them now or if I would have sucess with flowers???????

thanks again!

Is it too late to plant seeds for flowers???
It's not too late now, Plant spring flowers in the shaded areas.

You forgot to tell us where you are in the world. Antarctica? Alabama? Alaska?

My crystal ball is at the cleaner's, but in the Northern hemisphere you've got a shot.
Reply:I have tried the roll and grow and did not have any success, but it isn't that much trouble so why not give it a try. Just be sure that you kill out the weeds and grass where you are going to roll them out, and put up some kind of barrier so that you can keep them at bay. Keep the flowers moist until they start to grow, I think mine got too dry, and that stuff they grow them on drys out very fast.
Reply:Depends on the kind flowers, but I think you can still do it.
Reply:You can plant some flowers for next spring or you can still plant some flowers for this summer, but they will have to be fast growing ones. Look on the back of the seed packet to see how long it takes them to mature.
Reply:depends where do you live and do you have early or late winter
Reply:some might come up but you might want to save it for next season.
Reply:No it just depends on what kind of flowers. Look at the back of the package to see how long it takes for them to bloom. I think you can still have some, maybe in late August or Early September. That's a few months of enjoyment.
Reply:Depends on what kind...

In what part of a dicots flower are seeds produced?
Seeds develop from fertilized ovules, which are housed inside the carpel.
Reply:Ovules.
Reply:The ovary. Seeds always develop from ovules inside the ovary. Different fruits often have different parts that you will eat (mesocarp, receptacle, etc.), but the seeds are made in the ovaries.

Moon Flower Seeds?

What is the best way to germinate them?

Moon Flower Seeds?
If you mean datura, then sowing it into loose soil works well. You can also start them in smaller seed starters and transplant when they've sprouted. Keep them damp and they'll come out fine. I have several and had no problems with germination (actually pretty close to 100%) on any of the various types of datura. The seeds are poisonous, so it's a good idea to wash up after handling them or the plants just as a precaution.
Reply:The best way to germinate moon flower seeds is to wrap them up in a wet paper towel and leave them in a warm and dark area. Seeds should germinate within 3 days.
Reply:Its best to nick them with a knife. Then soak them over night. Make sure to keep the soil moist until they germinate. Good luck

I'm in Wisconsin, when would you say I should plant my flower seeds.?

gotta love Wisconsin...72 degrees on day and 38 degrees the next...LOL Wisconsin is zone 5 for planting so you need to wait until after the last threat of frost unless you are planting in a very protective area. I usually don't plant until the end of may, but I live in southern Wisconsin, if you are further up north you should wait a couple more weeks. and you might want to consider starting your seeds in the house, you can start with that now.

WHEN YOU ARE POSITIVE THAT YOU WON'T HAVE ANY MORE FROST OR SNOW PARTICULARLY WHEN THE TEMPERTURE IS AVOVE 40 AT NIGHT
Reply:Well you're in luck I work for the largest garden retailer in Wisconsin, Stein Gardens %26amp; Gifts, and we tell our customers right around the end of May and possibly before if you're sure that we will not be receiving any frost in your area.
Reply:I believe you are in the same zone as me, in Ohio. I never plant before Memorial Day. The risk of frost makes the danger of the plant shoots dying a big one.
Reply:Not until the end of May probably
Reply:For a sure answer, call up your nearest greenhouse (or gardening neighbor) and ask. Seeds themselves are fairly hardy and can usually survive a frost, but seedlings and new root systems are very sensitive and a frost will kill them, so plant when there's no real concern of frost. If you do experience a cold snap after you've planted your seeds, usually covering your gardens with a tarp or blanket will protect them as long as the ground doesn't freeze.

What would you do if a piece of shell like a flower seed is lodged in your throat?

I have ate a piece of shell [flower seed] and it got stuck but I'm am still alive, and doesn't know what to do?Please help me, I am 10 years old.

What would you do if a piece of shell like a flower seed is lodged in your throat?
Do a self Heimlich maneuver! Put your fist above your belly button and just under your sternum, push in a little, now put your other hand over it, find a chair or counter or table edge and shove into it hard! Making the fist push in and up on the diaphragm. A big burst of air should propel the shell out of you! Good luck! Call 911 if it doesn't get out after 2 tries!
Reply:If it's not too far down, try to cough it out but not too hard or you'll hurt yourself. You can try to eat something soft yet what takes up your entire esophagus. I'm Asian so we eat fish and when we get fish spines stuck, we eat rice to push it down. Liquids won't help because it'll just go through the open areas. I suggest some bread?
Reply:Go tell your parents...and start drinking water or something. Or eat some bread.

How is translated the german word kornblume into english? I have been given some seeds of this flower?
I think cornflower is right. German WIkipedia gives the latin as Centaurea Cyanus which are bachelor buttons. These border o being wildflowers. Check the picture at Martha Stewart Living to make sure it is the same. Cultivation and info below from MarthaStewart.com:

Centaurea cyanus 'Blue Boy'

Common name bachelors buttons, cornflower

PLANT DESCRIPTION

Cornflowers are great plants for the cutting garden or flower border, and 'Blue Boy' is no exception. Bearing wonderful fluffy, light blue flowers on densely branched upright plants, this wildflower is well suited for cutting, drying, and pressing. Cornflowers are self-sowers that do best in cool weather.

Soil poor, well drained

Soil pH slightly-acidic-to-neutral-pH6.5-7

Soil moisture moist

Bloom time summer

Flower color blue

Bloom size 2 in. to 2 in.

Foliage color medium-green

FEATURES

Attractive flowers

Attracts butterflies

Drought tolerant

GARDEN USES

Naturalizing

Flower beds and borders

OTHER USES

Cutting or arrangements

Everlasting/Dried arrangements (use for drying and pressing)

COMBINE WITH

other gray-green or silver plants like wormwood (Artemisia), Jerusalem sage (Phlomis), and lamb's ears (Stachys byzantina 'Silver Carpet').

HOW TO SOW/PLANT

Direct sow in a sunny, well-drained site, after danger of frost has passed. In mild climates, sow in fall. Or start indoors 1/4 inch deep, 3¿4 weeks before last frost. Space young plants at a distance equal to their mature spread. Successive sowings will produce continuous blooms.

Days to germination: 7¿14

WATER AND FERTILIZE

Water moderately, allowing soil to dry between waterings (early morning watering is best). Do not overfertilize because this will lead to excessive leaf growth at the expense of blossoms.

DO YOU KNOW?

This plant's common name, cornflower, refers to the fact that it was once typically found growing amid field-grain crops (generally referred to as corn) in Europe. Other plants named for their association with grain fields are corn-cockle (Agrostemma), corn poppy (Papaver rhoeas), and corn marigold (Chrysanthemum segetum).

GENERAL MAINTENANCE

Deadhead spent blooms to encourage flowering but let some flowers mature for self-sowing.

PESTS/DISEASES

Root rot, stem rot, and powdery mildew may occur.

CONTROLS

Allow soil to dry between waterings or plant in well-drained soil to prevent rot. To discourage powdery mildew, increase air circulation, avoid wetting leaves when watering and remove diseased leaves.

GARDEN HINT

Cornflowers bloom more when crowded. If started in hotter weather, plants will be shorter and have fewer flowers.

Advertized o TV a "carpet" carrying flower seeds: just lay out on and add water. Flowers grow..?

It's the same thing as sod, or "carpet" grass, yeah it works, but I wouldn't get it... You don't get much quality at all with these "easy to do, make your life easy" products, really all your doing is sacrificing quality for luxury. I wish you well!

Advertized o TV a "carpet" carrying flower seeds: just lay out on and add water. Flowers grow..?
Waste of money and time! Go to your local Garden Center and tell them about what you want and they will recommend something. Don't go to a mega-store like Home Depot or Loews the employees usually are not garden savvy!
Reply:I did that once. It was a pretty neat array of flowers. They bloomed all summer. Just keep it watered. You still have to de-weed the ground before laying your seed carpet down. Weeding during the season is less than normal. If you have limited time or an aversion to actually digging in and handling dirt, then I'd say it's worth a try.
Reply:I've tried these and they didn't work for me! Some the flowers didn't grow at all and others were so scanty and puny looking that I will never try them again.
Reply:yes they do, but they are not the greatest flowers, plus they are quite pricy compared to normal seeds

Where are the seeds on a gardenia flower?

i read that gardenias produce seeds .i dont see any seeds on mine

Where are the seeds on a gardenia flower?
If your variety is thunbergia, it's hard work getting the seed! You have to smash the fruits open and scoop it out by hand. Use a hammer or other blunt instrument to get the fruit open, and then use a nail or heavy spoon to scrape out the seed. Pretty unforgiving work!

If you have gardenia "jasminoides" or the common gardenia, your work will be a little easier at getting the seeds from the fruit (which follows behind the bloom), but from seed it can take 2 to 3 years for a new plant to bloom, whereas if you do air layering or take a cutting, you'll have a blooming plant in a year. Check out this site for more info: http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/oc/freepubs/...

Goodluck!

I pick the deadth flower buttons from the Marigold. And keep their seeds. Do they really grow?

A friend of mine told me, when I pick the dead headings from the Marigold, I can open them and take out their seeds. Wondering will they really work when I plant them next year in starters?

I pick the deadth flower buttons from the Marigold. And keep their seeds. Do they really grow?
Yes they do. I have done it for years. Save a couple of the cardboard egg cartons and use them as the starter pots - they are bio-degradeable and easily come apart.

I do this with about 90% of the flowers in my garden.
Reply:Yes, they have always grown well for me.
Reply:Of corse they do i i grew them in a pot last year!
Reply:Hi,

Yes, they are the same seeds. Even though the marigold is an annual, I've been growin a big patch for 4 years by picking the seeds and re-planting the following year. Some tips:

- Let them totally dry out on the plant. Don't pick when they first turn brown, but when they become brittle.

- I like to open them and take out the seeds before storing.

- Don't store in an airtight container if they are wet - they will rot.

- Store in a cool place over the winter.

- Plant in the spring.

You end up with a lot of seeds - so you can direct seed if your climate will permit it. Also, if you have particularly vigorous or colorful plants, you can do some selective picking so you try to get those characteristics next year.

Good Luck.
Reply:I have about ten or twelve coming up right now from seeds ~yes, they really do grow

have fun!

You will probably not get seeds from your pineapple plant. They need to have a different variety of pineapple for the pollen. However, after your pineapple flower turns to a fruit the mother plant will produce a bunch of 'pups' (little sprouts around the bottom) which you can separate and grow into more pineapple plants.

If the seeds are of the Californian poppy,by all means sow them now.You might care to buy Oriental poppies, the big red ones seen on Armistice Day.These are available now, grown in pots and increase yearly.

Is it too late to sow poppy seeds to flower this year?
No it's fine to sow them now, and if you plant them earlier, it's always good to have a later sowing, which staggers the flowering period - this is worth doing with many annuals which don't have a really long flowering time. Just doing my 2nd sowing now.

Hope this helps. Good luck! Rob

When they started to grow, I replanted them in a larger pot, and have kept them on my kitchen window sill which gets a lot of sunlight. We keep waiting for them to flower. Is there something we ought to be doing besides watering them? Should they be planted outside or stay inside?

If you are talking about Zinnias they are an annual plant and usually grow outdoors in full sunlight.

they require a good soil with sime mulch to keep them moist but not wet.

they usually flower in late summer to early autumn.

the flowers are like a daisy but sort of stiff and the leaves feel leathery to the touch.

I hope this helps
Reply:If you mean Zinnia, then it takes a few months to flower depending on the species - and if it grows to it's full height, 36" plus, then you'll want to plant it outside and it will bloom in late summer - collect the seeds in the fall and do it all over again! (but it's better to let nature grow this plant to establish it's root system)

Sow direct flower seeds?

I,VE BEEN TRYING FOR TWO YEARS TO GROW THESE SEEDS IN POTS BUT THEY GROW ABOUT 10mm THEN DIE WHAT AM I DOING WRONG .HELP PLEASE :(

Sow direct flower seeds?
If you are using the same seeds from 2 years ago, that could be the problem - old seeds sometimes won't germinate at all and when they do they are not healthy plants.

Start out with new seeds, a good planting medium and small pots (egg carton works great, or the 4 packs you get when buying annuals). You want to make sure you water your seeds once a day (only once) and keep a light over them (grow light if possible but a regular light bulb works just as good). When you start seeing growth, keep the daily watering up and move the light up away from them just a little. If you notice your seedlings are kinda lanky (tall stemmed) then lower the light back to them. Not too close though because they will burn. You'll just have to watch them to get that happy medium on the light. Once you get them to about an inch or two tall start taking them outside (open air, not direct sunlight) for about a week but make sure you cover them or place them back inside during the night, then the next week let them stay out all day/all night - not in direct sunlight. Continue with the daily watering and then slowly introduce them to direct sunlight at various lengths until they are good hardy little plants. Then you can transplant them into your garden. Hope this helps and works for you - it's how I do all my seeds. Good luck!
Reply:Maybe to much water, not enough sun. maybe sowed too close. I would take the seeds and lay them between 2 paper towels placed in a dish, pie pan. Keep the paper towels wet ( slight water everyday) and when the seedlings are big enough to transplant move them to dirt or peat pots.
Reply:Okay ,since you didn't say much about the kind of flowers, then I will give you a general answer. First are these the same seeds you are planting every year ,from the same packet? If so they are too old. If you look on the seed packets you will see an expiration date. If that is okay, are you planting in pots outside? If so, you may be putting them out too early climate wise or they may need propegating inside first before planting outside. To do this, you can get inexpensive plastic trays for starting seedlings of plants. You put the soil in each little square and plant the seed as directed on the packet, some you barely brush the soil over, others about an eighth to a quarter inch deep. You water them , then some have a plastic lid that you put over it sometimes water or a layer of wet paper towels in the tray under the plants, the lid acts like a greenhouse and keeps moisture inside and then you put in a sunny area and let it germinate and once they reach a few inches in height, they can be gently lifted out and transplanted into pots of your choice with potting soil(I use miracle gro with feed in it, and moisture hold,as it will prevent you from having to over water it) , and be careful not to get them in full hot sun until they aclimate to the outside. indirect to partial to start, unless the packet says they are a shade plant. All that information should be on your packet. But seeds expire, so buy new ones each season. Some flowers if brought inside during winter, can grow all year and be put out again in the spring.

Bulbs can go into the ground as soon as it is workable. Seeds should wait until after the last frost is anticipated.
Reply:if you bought the bulbs and seeds in packets, check the label as to when the best time of year for each different plant is. if not, you can always take them down to your local nursery for a bit of advice

I'm looking for some seeds from a cleome (spider flower) plant that I can plant next year. Anyone have any?

I had some of these years ago and I loved them and can't find them anywhere. I would trade some old fashioned hollyhock (light pink) seeds for them. Or does anyone know a place I can buy them?

I have Cleome seeds in various colors. Write me at kleowithak@yahoo and will send you some. PS Would love to have Hollyhock seeds :)!

Try either Johnny's Seeds or Park Seed. They will send you free catalogs and both are very reputable.

Reply:try looking for them at a home depot, Lowes Lumber yards. Or try a local nursrery
Reply:It really is too late to start with seeds for this season. IF you want the plants, buy either baskets that are already pretty, or plants and put them into planters....that is the only way you are going to have decent plants this year. Next spring, start seeds indoors, about End of February, then when danger of frost is over, move them outside. Good luck
Reply:For most parts of the country it is too late to start seeds, espcially lobelia. Lobelia is a slow germinator and takes a while to get big enough to transplant. Look for the seed at a garden center or order from Parks Seeds or Johnny's seeds, or sny of the other commercial seed companies.
Reply:Check your local garden centers and stay away from the big box stores. Garden centers almost always have a better, higher quality selection and have knowledgable people who can help you. Plus if they dont have what you want they can you in most cases order it for you. Ask someone at Wal Mart about Lobelia and you'll probably get "uuhhh, does she work in jewelry?"

What are some flower seeds I can plant in pots this July? I live in AL.?

Its really too late to plant seeds now and expect flowers before winter. You may be able to find annuals on sale at garden centres to put in your pots.

Next year, start your flower seeds indoors about 6 weeks before planting out date. Or plant the seeds outdoors about the time of the last frost date.

I planted some seeds but only one type of flower is coming up! Can anyone tell me why?

i planted some seeds about 2 weeks ago like sweet pea flowers,

sunfowers, daisys, straflowers, morning glorys, and moonflowers. The only place where anything is coming up is where iplanted the morning glorys and moonflowers. Why isn't anything else coming up. help!!!

I planted some seeds but only one type of flower is coming up! Can anyone tell me why?
1. different plants have different germination times. Be patient.

2. different plants have different soil needs. Perhaps some of the seeds couldn't get the proper nutrient for them to grow.

3. different plants need different sun conditions.

4. Some seeds could be dead, won't germinate.

5. Some plant seeds need different procedures for planting. (ex. scarifying, kept very moist with high humidity, etc.)

6. You planted them too deep.

I'm very surprised your sunflowers did not come up. They are usually the hardiest, so I'm suspecting that you planted your seeds too deep. Good luck with the moon flower, I had a very difficult time getting mine to germinate....
Reply:Sure you can use fertilizer..... If it is dry where you are, use liquid like Miracle Grow, if it is wet use Milorganite. It is granular and won't burn.... Report It

Reply:different plants/flowers have different rates of germination. I wouldn't worry yet. give it some time.
Reply:the veg and fruit plants can take up to a month...i had strawberries that took about a month to even show any signs that they were planted.

What kinds of flowers seeds require the least amount of maintenance?

for example, i just want to go outside throw some seeds around and in a couple months a want a floor of small colorful flowers. is that even possible?

What kinds of flowers seeds require the least amount of maintenance?
The only kind of seeds that need little maintenance, are the ones that have re-seeded themselves from the previous year. Bu if you plant them, no matter what kind, they will need a little TLC, especially water. You can't put seeds into dry soil and never water them and expect them to come up. If, they do come up, it will be short lived.

And if you want to have flowers that quickly, you are better off going to a Nursery and getting plants that have already started.

To grow from seed, conditions have to be pretty darn good. Sun, rain and temperature.
Reply:zinniza's, marigold, forget me knots, hollyhocks, cosmos, all can be purchased at dollar store.

Collecting Flower seeds now?

I have ALOT of different plants this year that I bought full grown, and some are already showing seed pods! I have never collected my own seeds before, but the seed pods I am seeing, some are already dry, open and empty. Just to name a few, are my portulaca, geraniums, snapdragon, and petunia. Are these seeds good to keep and plant next year or are they a fluke? I always thought seed pods weren't mature until fall.

Collecting Flower seeds now?
yes you can save and store seeds.. just keep them in a cool, dry place and label them so next year you have even more flowers.. i start my seeds in door in the very early spring... and then transplant them outside.. good luck!
Reply:The flowers you listed should be okay to collect seeds from. Seed production time depends on the type of plant and your location. Some plants are hybrids and the seeds from those plants most likely will not produce plants like you bought. They usually revert back to one of the unhybridized varieties of the plant, but even then you can get some quality plants from your "free" seeds.
Reply:Seeds form on flowers at different times. It just depends on the flowers. I save seeds from my plants to use later. It is a great way to save some money next year and you can share with friends.
Reply:I save seeds too. Any time they are starting to dry up, go ahead and pick them off. Put a paper towel on a plate, cookie sheet, etc and place the seeds on it to finish drying. If you don't, they will mold. After they are completely dry, put them in a baggie, label what it is, and pop them into your freezer until next year. When you get ready to plant next year, get them out of the freezer a couple of days before planting. Mine does really well this way.
Reply:u can also go with what mother nature is doing and let them do this naturally so they will seem to "come back" next year, which makes it seem as though they are perennials instead of actually being annuals! also to add to one of the answers up top..... do not and i repeat do not put ur seeds in ur freezer...... put em in ut fridge..... i put mine in the cheese compartment till i'm ready to use em! also when u r ready to use em.... soak em in a cup of water for at least 18 to 24 hours then direct sow them into soil.. be a pot or outside... they will germinate 75% faster this way then any other method! good luck and happy seed collecting!

Why do flower seeds take so much longer to germinate than vegetable seeds ? And they are so little !?

Many flower seeds are designed to travel through a bird's intestines first, and/or pass through a very cold winter spell. See why size matters?

Most of the food seeds we currently use are hybrids, the results of dozens of years of fooling with. One desirable trait is fast germination.

Also most beans can be dried, then boosted with things like innoculants to germinate faster.

Sun flower seeds fattening enough?

i weigh about 171,

Sun flower seeds gives me something to do and

i eat them all day.

i want to get down to atleast 140.

would it work?

Sun flower seeds fattening enough?
It might work to a certain extent -- once U are bored of eating the sunflower seeds, there's the danger of binge eating on your favorite foods.

U could alternate diff. types of foods -- celery sticks, carrots, boiled beans, bean sprouts %26amp; drink plenty of water along w/ exercise -- could be walking 20-25 min @ a stretch %26amp; doing it twice in a day.

Healthy Eating %26amp; Good luck !
Reply:probably not.

you need other nutrients from other foods than just seeds to stay healthy and lose weight.

i suggest just eating healthier and exercising more.
Reply:No.. you need a more balanced diet..your body will start storing the fat if you eat so little instead of losing it!...and you will have zero energy.... eat 1200 calories a day.. a variety of healthy foods...... I have lost 50 lbs by just walking and eating 1200 calories a day in the last 6 months............and LOTS of water :) ... Of course you can still incorporate sunflower seeds in your diet .. Yum I LOVE them on a chicken salad!
Reply:most nuts are high in fats, but they are good fats. not like meat and grease. if you eat a lot of sunflower seeds, witch would be a LOT to keep a 170 pound person from starving, you would have eaten a lot of fat, and even tho it isnt bad fat its still fat.

stick to watching the junk food intake and do some exercise 3 or 4 times a week. even if its just walking 2 miles or jogging 1

I live in rural missouri... when should i start planting seeds in my flower beds?

I live in rural missouri too near the missouri- arkansas line.....i usally start planting seeds sometime next month after the next frost ends......so they dont die....lol

I live in rural missouri... when should i start planting seeds in my flower beds?
Here in Massachusetts we plant cold-weather plants like spinach and carrots as soon as you can dig the soil; i.e. it is no longer frozen. Warm weather plants such as corn, beans and pumpkins which would be harmed by a frost are planted 'when the oak leaves are as big as a squirrel's ear'.

You should be able to figure out when that would be for your area.

BTW, with Global Warming, the USDA Zones have moved north by about 1/2 a zone so the absolute dates have changed, but the nature-related clues still apply because they keep up with the weather change.
Reply:I live just north of you in southern Iowa. My rule of thumb is to wait till Mother's Day to plant stuff outdoors . That always seems to work well for me.

Flower seeds in a packet --?

Im an excellent gardener.

I havent been able to get packet seeds to grow in several years now.

If anything grows at all, it will only be 1-2 plants out of the entire packet.

Im not talking about hard to grow things. Im talking marigolds, ziennias and such.

I asked this on my discussion board, and found they do not grow much for anyone else.

Then I found a gardening website from the UK ( Im in the US) . They said, the seeds theyve bought, dont grow either.

Are we just being scammed ?

Flower seeds in a packet --?
I live in Canada and we have the same problem as well. this year i went out and bought a jiffy mini greenhouse and planted a bunch of seeds. they grew but then started to all die. along our bulevards we have many different flowers that the city plants and i use to take the dead heads off the marigolds while walking by and dry the seeds, then plant them . they use to grow. a couple of years ago i tried the same thing and none of them would grow. i think they have done something to them so that you can not regrow the seeds, and if that is so then maybe they are taking those and putting them in the seed packs for us unsuspecting gardeners to by, or maybe the seeds are just bad all together. which ever the case. i have just resorted to buying seedlings.
Reply:don't bother with seeds just buy plug ins don't cost much more
Reply:Most people buy the cheap 10 cent seed packets. Sometimes they grow, sometimes they don't. Check the date printed in light ink on the end of the packet to make sure the seeds are this years. Avoid last years seeds.

This method will give you almost 100% germination but requires a little work.

Take two styro foam or real plates, place a damp paper towel over one. Sprinkle the seeds on the paper towel. Cover with a second damp paper towel, the turn the second plate upside down over the plate with the paper towels. Place both plates inside a large ziplock bag. Set in a warm dark place.

In two weeks most seeds will have sprouted. Plant the sprouted seeds very shallow in pots, or in your flower bed.
Reply:I do best with collecting my own seeds. I buy a market pack or two of ones I like (zinnias, marigolds, impatiens, vinca, snapdragons), then collect those seeds at the end of the season, placing them in envelopes, identified and dated. I usually have good germination and TONS of seeds each year. I'm in zone 7 and even have return flowers by sprinkling spent blossom seeds in the garden in the fall. You have to know how to identify them by the leaves to thin when they pop up.

Who Knows About Vegetable/Flower Seeds?

I am doing an experiment on germination and I haven't decided the type of seed I want to use for it yet. Any suggestions? I'm looking for a large seed like maybe a Lima Bean?

Thanks so much!

Who Knows About Vegetable/Flower Seeds?
beans germinate quickly - lima beans, english peas, snap beans could be compared for time to germinate or moisture need. Just use fully dried seeds of all three,
Reply:True seeds are plant embryos in a suspended state of development. Warm and moist conditions allows the seed embryo to continue developing into a plant.

There are two main types of plants which produce true seeds, angiosperms and gymnosperms. Gymnosperms are cone bearing plants like pines and fir trees. They don't have flowers and the seeds develop between the scales of the cones without a protective covering. Because of this, conifers are sometimes said to have "naked seeds".

Angiosperms are flowering plants and there are two types of these. The monocots include things such as corn, orchids and coconuts. These plants have seeds in which the first leaf remains encased in the seed. Corn kernels remain underground and the first leaves are actually the second pair. Dicots have a pair of "seed leaves" (or cotyledons) and they are easy to see in plants like beans or squash. Some dicots copy monocots in their growth however. Acorns are dicots, but the seed leaves stay underground tightly encased in the nut. These help feed the sapling until it has grown enough leaves to feed itself. If the acorn is unearthed, the seed leaves will be seen to form a pair, as they do in all dicots. Monocots have only a single seed leaf.

Besides moisture and heat, there are other factors which influence germination. Sometimes fire is necessary. The cones of many pine species have to be roasted in an open flame before the seeds can be released. This mechanism ensures the ground plants are eliminated by flash fires and gives the saplings a competative edge. Some seeds are coated in chemicals which inhibit germination. The chemicals have to slowly wash away from the seeds before they germinate. Some desert plants employ this stragety. It ensures the seeds germinate only under prolonged peroids of rain. Orchids have the most evolved seeds. These plants are monocots whose seeds are as small as dust grains. There is very little food for the baby orchid, and to grow it must land in just the right spot. If it is lucky enough to do so, a symbiotic fungus infects it and begins to feed the orchid minerals from decomposing organic material.
Reply:Lima beans are great. Kidney beans are great and right off the store shelf in the bags that would normally be eaten. You don't need the expensive packets that more often than not have chemicals on them. What do you want to look at with regard to your project and how do you plan to collect your information?
Reply:Read on the back of the seed packets at the store and you can tell how long you'll have to wait and how much sun, etc, you will need. Green beans are the most reliable where I live in Arkansas.

Good luck with your project.
Reply:try a coconut. it's pretty big and if it doesn't work you can eat it.

How rose flower seeds are dispersed?

how rose flower seeds are dispersed

How rose flower seeds are dispersed?
The primary vector for seed dispersal in roses is by birds. The fleshy fruit (rose hips) is highly attractive to birds and the prickly seeds are either discarded or pass unharmed through the bird's digestive system.

See: http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/inde...

minootoo: Grafting and rooting have nothing to do with seed dispersal.

Added - While I appreciate your attempts toward making this a lively discussion, please let me correct some of your inserted statements, which are either misleading or still off topic. (1) You are not correct when you say that "all seeds are dispersed by wind, birds, and animals" (side note: birds _are_ animals). Animals have little role to play in the dispersal of wind-dispersed seeds (e.g., dandelion) and wind has very little to do with the dispersal of large seeds/seeds in large fruits (e.g, fruit of the African sausage tree). Your statement also ignores dispersal of seeds by water, gravity/ballistic means, and fire. (2) Why obscure the issue by allowing only that I'm correct with regard to the "literal interpretation" of the question? If we're going to routinely provide off-topic answers on here, I think that will only be to the detriment of this site. They asked about seed dispersal, not human attempts at grafting roses, and my answer was about seed dispersal. (3) Finally, hybridization and gene duplication (aka polyploidization) are two very important mechanisms of speciation in plants -- and, incidentally, quite prevalent in the rose family -- so it is misleading to talk about hybrid failure as a general rule in plants. They hybridize much more easily than animal taxa on average, and new taxa (which do not "revert to their original roots") often arise naturally as a consequence of this hybridization.

ThenozhiR: You do realize that the sole purpose of flowers is to produce seeds (aka fertilized ovules) on the chance that they will be dispersed and form a new plant (aka offspring), yes? Granted, flowers do not "transform" into seeds per se, but the process of seed production is not a whole lot different from that simple description either.
Reply:All seed are dispersed by wind, birds, and animals.

In case of rose and other plants. When all the petals falls off, then it forms a pod (Hip) which contains seed, they fall to the ground sooner or later and most of the time they do not produce new young plant but once in while a new plant comes up. In many cases birds eat the pods up and some seed will find the way to the ground in birds dropping also, they may be good to germinate or not.

In General. Humnans dispers the "PLant itself", for propegation.

Rose is Dispersed (propagated) by:

1. Grafting, a hybrid on a regular sturdy rose or a maple, plant. For detail put "Grafting methods" in any search engine.

2. Rooting, a cut or a twig is taken and then place in a water container with rooting compound(fertiliser high in phosphate, bone ash). It will form roots and then it can be planted in ground or in a pots, preferred method is to pot it and then after a season or more put it in the ground, or garden.

In both these cases, one has to be very care full not to let is get out of hand. In many location a licence is needed to commercially propagate the plants. There may be other liabilities, such as copy write and the patents.

3. They come up from the roots also but if you let that happen then you will loose the hybrid.

I do have few wild roses that propagate from self seeding every now and then.

Thenozhi... is correct, but I am trying to grow them from pods in a pot, let see what happens.

"mavster" you are completely correct as far as litteral interpretation of this Q?, goes, but natural dispersal is a means to achieve the propergation of plant to that end, No. 1 and No. 2 are the main method used comercially.

Most of the roses that we see in a garden are hybrid and in case of any hybrid, natural dispersment hardly works and when it does work , it produce some defferent variety (loooses the hybrid, and reverts back to it original roots).
Reply:I never heard that the reoseflower transforms to a seed to reproduce rose plants, but I have planted bits of its branches in the wet soil for about 3 to 4 inches deep and watered it regularly and found new leaves emergomg after a weeks time.Ok be happy.

Germanating flower seeds?

hI, Ive bought some summer plant seeds and says ive to germinate them for 14 days. I have put them in separate small pots and put them on the sunny window sill.

What I would like to know is, do I keep them watered and I have them in a good place. \There are not any instructions on the packets I bought.

Your advise would be appreciated. Also are bulbs faster growing?

Thanks

Germanating flower seeds?
Keep the soil damp but not wet, you could put each pot in a clear plastic bag to cut down drying but look at them every day and when they have sprouted take off the bag. You will then need to keep a close eye to make sure they don't dry out.

When the seedlings are about one to one and a half inches high you will need to gently loosen the compost and transplant them into their own pots or several into a bigger pot to give them space to develop. Keep them in bright light BUT NOT SUN. When they are several inches high and look stronger, say in three or four weeks then plant them carefully in the garden and make sure they are watered regularly until they have settled in 7 - 10 days. Bulbs don't grow any faster but they last from year to year. Overall bulb plants are easier to look after but the range is limited.
Reply:It helps if you can put some clear plastic bags over them to keep the moisture in.
Reply:I like to put them in a clear bag until they germinate but make sure you check them daily and don't let it get too hot. You may need to have a peephole .

Keep the soil damp but not wet.

As soon as you see any green remove the bag.

A sunny window is a good place but once you start to get true leaves ( the first pair that you see are called cotyledons and are just "helper" leaves) then it does help to rotate the pots aboout a quarter every day or so to ensure they get sun from all sides and don't start leaning to the window to get more sun.

Also depending on how many seeds you put in each pot yo may have to be ruthless and thin the pot out to allow well spaced seedlings to grow. If they are too crowded they will not thrive.

Welcome to the wonderful world of gardening
Reply:yes, keep them in a sunny nice place(like you said on your window sill) and always keep them watered. dont over water them though. but dont give them to less water just inbetween! no problems!
Reply:don't water them unless they need it but they should be ok for a few weeks to much water gives them damp rot prick them out when the second leaf is about 1 inch
Reply:you need to keep the soil moist
Reply:keep the compost damp but not wet
Reply:All seeds need to be covered at twice the depth of the seed size.Did you do that?No cover,no growth, too deep cover,no growth. You need less water than you might imagine, the seed will germinate with even a hint of moisture, once germinated then water a bit more.Remove from sunny spot after germination, place in a cool, but light environment, otherwise they will grow too quick and get leggy.

Where can i find a website that offers free flower seeds and ect for gardening?
There are agencies that give away vegetable seeds and support for growing, but it might be harder to get free flower seeds unless you have some to swap. You could try googling "free flower seeds" and the name of your state.
Reply:Try thefreesite.com Maybe the FDA or Farmers Association gov gives them to citizens.

How do I take the seeds from a flower and try to grow more?

Do I wait for them to die or can I plant them now?

How do I take the seeds from a flower and try to grow more?
While I am by no means an expert I wait for the flowers to die back including the seed buds or whatever and when they are dried out I take them off and lay them on newspapers to dry out even more. Then I save them in envelopes and in the next spring plant them. Each individual seeds, not the whole seed pod.. I start almost all my flowers this way. I suppose if you live in a warm place you can plant them right after they are dry but where I live we only have the one growing season each year. (Pennsylvania) Have fun saving your seeds and growing new plants. It can be addicting. LOL

Reply:Don't lop off the flower from the plant until the flower is completely spent. The flower has to grow through its complete cycle before it will seed.Usually the top of the stem leading to the dead flower has shriveled a bit and the center will generally have the seeds in it.

Get an airtight jar or bottle-like a prescription bottle that's clean and put the seeds in that. Some people use zip lock baggies. You'll be able to tell the seeds. I'd wait until next spring to plant them however.

Where can i buy this Flower (Cleome "White Queen") itself or in a vase. I dont want the seeds...?

http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=aV2...

i want this flower but i dont want to buy just the seeds.

Where can i buy this Flower (Cleome "White Queen") itself or in a vase. I dont want the seeds...?
Cleome does not lend itself to transplanting. Generally, you just plant the seeds where you want the flower to grow.

Also, you don't find them available as cut flowers at the florists, because they die quickly once cut.

The best way to enjoy them is to throw some seeds in your garden where you would like them to grow. (literally - they self seed very well, and when I want to expand where they grow, I just take seeds, and toss them where I want.)

Probability. flower seeds! help me please! =)?

two flower seeds are randomly selected from a package that contains 5 seeds for red flowers, and 3 seeds for white flowers.

a) what is the probability that both seeds will result in red flowers?

b) what is the probability both colors are represented?

c) what is the probability both seeds are white flowers?

Probability. flower seeds! help me please! =)?
Since there are 8 seeds in the package,

there are (8)(7)/2=28 possible two seed combinations.

This is because there are 8 seeds for the first choice, times 7 seeds for the second choice, divided by 2, since there are two different orders that you can select each pair of seeds.

Of those 28 combinations, (5)(4)/2=10 combinations will both be red,

(3)(2)/2=3 will both be white, and

(5)(3)=15 combinations including both colors.

To answer your question,

a) p=10/28

b) p=3/28

c) p=15/28

Notice that when I figured the probability that both colors would be represented, I paired the 5 red seeds with the 3 white seeds to yield 15 combinations.

When figuring the combinations of just white seeds, and just red seeds, I divided by two to keep from counting each pair of seeds twice.
Reply:assume without replacement.

there are 8 seeds total.

a) the probabity of picking a seed that is for red flowers is 5/8. After one seed is picked out, there are 7 seeds left and 4 out of which are seeds for red flowers. That gives you the probability of picking a second seed that is also for red flower is 4/7

P = (5/8) * (4/7)

P = 5/14

b) both colors are presented. One for red flowers and one for white flowers

for red flower: P = 5/8

one seed is picked out, 7 are left. and 3 of them are for white flower

since order does not matter, there are two ways you can pick the two seeds

Red and white

white and red

P = 2 (5/8) (3/7)

P = 15/28 %26lt;== answer

c) same concept

P = (3/8) (2/7)

P = 3/28 %26lt;== answer

5/8 times 3/7= 15/56+15/56=30/56=15/28

3/8 times 2/7= 6/56= 3/28
Reply:a) ( 5/8 x 4/7 ) = 5/14

b) ( 5/8 x 4/7 ) + ( 3/8 x 2/7 ) = 0.03827

c) (3/8 x 2/7) = 3/28

Sun flower seeds?

My sun flowers are just coming to the end. How do i take the seeds from the middle and how do i store them in the winter months so i can plant them next year.

Sun flower seeds?
cut the top once the flower petals have fallen and leave it on a plate, face down for a day or two. after setting, tap on the back of the flower head and let the seeds fall. store them in a dry, dark place until ready to plant in Spring
Reply:put the head of the plant in a bucket and let the seeds fall out on there own. keep the seeds in a dry place and dont them dry out. make sure there not exposed to any moister because they will go moldy and bee no good for the following year.
Reply:Just thought I would mention that earwigs may be inside the head of the flower so whatever way you choose to get seeds out don't do it indoors !!!! Have fun ;)
Reply:cut the heads off and put them somewhere dry, when you see that all the seeds are fully formed on the head, remove them, discard the head. then all you do is keep them in a dry place until you need them preferably in a paper bag. have fun
Reply:Agree with answers so far but can I suggest that you might consider leaving one or two seed heads on your bird table for the birds? Just cut off the plant close to the base of the head and leave the heads lying seeds upwards. The birds will really appreciate this and you'll still have loads off the other seed heads for planting next year.

How Do I Grow Pansies From Seeds In A flower Pot?

Could someone give me the steps, so that I can follow them.

How Do I Grow Pansies From Seeds In A flower Pot?
Morning sun, pm shade. place a strip of saran wrap over the pot to create a greenhouse effect. Use a mild mixture of miracle gro and water.(after they begin to sprout, use the miracle gro plant food sticks! (They're $1 or so, then only use water). Never pour miracle gro into the green plant itself, it will burn it. make sure you use good potting mix and not cheap stuff. They should also be exposed to the pollen (which is shedding right now so lose the saran wrap or create holes for the pollen to get in........)

Are flower bulbs the same as flower seeds?

Are flower bulbs the same as flower seeds?

About the same as onions are from peas. One is a bulb and the other a flower seed.

The bulb is just a fattened leaf base growing on a bit of chunky stem. From this stem comes the flower bud too. When the flowers bloom, they can set seed too. You can also plant these seeds and get new plants from them. When the new plants are big enough, they send their food into the bases of their leaves to form another bulb again.

Other flower seeds make plants -- big ones like giant trees, small ones like grass seeds, and so many in between. Some of them will grow into plants that will eventually make bulbs too. Like onions and lilies and tulips.

But don't forget that bulbs started life from a flower seed too.

Are flower bulbs the same as flower seeds?
No, they are very different. Many flowers with bulbs also produce seed, which is hard to grow, therfore most flowering bulbs are grown from bulbs. The bulb is sort of an adaptation of roots and stems, as far as I know. The seeds are produced in the ovary of the flower.
Reply:They sort of are, but sort of not. Both bulbs and seeds produce flowers, but, some flowers grow from seeds, other flowers grow from bulbs.

Flowers like daffodils and tulips grow from bulbs. If you plant bulbs, you'll want to dig the bulbs up in the fall (after they have flowered) every few years, separate them, and replant them. They reproduce by making little baby bulbs off the main one (kind of like cloves of garlic), and you can separate them, and plant many more. In fact, after a few years, you should do this, because I think that bulbs get less productive the "clumpier" they get. I find them the most satisfying, because most of them come up quickly, and change every day. Also, a lot of them are spring flowers, so they mark the beginning of the garden.

Other flowers reproduce using seeds, which generally come from the center of the flower itself. There are three types of flower seeds; perennial, annual, and biennial.

I don't know a lot about biennials. They don't flower until the second year, and have always seemed like too much trouble to me.

Annuals are seeds that only produce flowers over one season. They tend to bloom for a longer period. They are often sold in flats (more expensive) at garden shops while already in bloom.

There is a subset of annuals which are called self seeding annuals. This means that the seeds will drop and repropagate themselves. I've had luck with sunflowers coming back year after year, in the weirdest places, as birds pick them off and drop them.

Perennials come back every year, and are really the cheapest way to go. One of my favorites is the black eyed susan.

Other flowers grow from corms, rhizomes and tubers. Wikipedia has a great section on plant reproduction.
Reply:Bulbs are, essentially, a permanent root - they will re-grow every year from the same plant. Seeds germinate, sprout, mature, then die. If that plant produces seeds AND if those seeds drop to the ground AND those seeds germinate next season, you'll get a replacement plant.
Reply:No they are not the same.
Reply:Bulbs are nice because they come back year after year and even multiply. Seeds die out after one season.

How do you take seeds from your aloe plant when it's in flower?

We have this aloe claviflora that has just flowered, i wanna know how am i suppost to take the seeds?

How do you take seeds from your aloe plant when it's in flower?
The seed capsules tend to go a pale green when they are ready for harvesting, and must be semi-dry and beginning to split open before seed is collected.

I want to plant a flower. How many seeds should I put in the pot?

Well, how many plants do you want to have? normally one or two per pot is enough but it depends on the type of plant. I use card box eggsboxes to grow seeds and once i have a nice little plant, I repot it in its final pot.

I planted Poopy flower seeds and nothing happen. I live in texas. Are these hard to grow?

I assume you mean poppy seeds?

Poppys are notoriously tough to start from seed and tough to transplant. At least they are in our area here in SD. Once you've got them going, though, they'll take care of themselves.

Try storing them in the fridge for a couple weeks before planting. Cold temps help prepare the seeds for germination. Make sure you have a well-prepared seed bed that's free of weeds, plant at the proper depth and water, water, water.

I planted Poopy flower seeds and nothing happen. I live in texas. Are these hard to grow?
Most poppy seeds just have to be scattered on the surface of the raked soil and pressed firmly. They belong to the light germinators, that is, they need light to germinate. If your seeds were sown too deeply, then they might have failed because of the lack of ight. The only other thing that I can think of is that birds picked them up before they had the chance to grow.
Reply:do you mean POPPY??

no they are easy to grow.
Reply:Poppies need a strong winter freeze to thrive. Your zone in TX may just be too warm for them. The do NOT like to be transplanted, and they are notoriously difficult to start from seed. Yes, they're touchy, but I agree with you, quite beautiful. Try freezing or refrigerating the seed for 6 weeks before you plant them and see if that helps you.
Reply:why would you want shitty flowers
Reply:I have never heard of poopy flowers, poppies on the other hand are easy. Just keep them moist.
Reply:If you just planted them then you are a bit late because the seeds need cool temps to germinate. Poppies typically bloom early summer and are done by mid summer. They reseed themselves freely and if you leave the area undisturbed you may get poppies next spring. Good luck

Planting expired flower and vegetable seeds.?

I have some seeds that have expired. The date is 11/07. Should I wast my time planting them or just toss them out. They less than three monthst past thier expiry date.

Planting expired flower and vegetable seeds.?
You will probably have less germination percentage. I have used expired seeds with no problems before.
Reply:Hey Kait,

You have some good answers already. Old seeds that are rare are worth planting past expiration.

At Monticello (Thomas Jefferson's home), archaeologists are excavating to see if they can find rare seeds that President Jefferson had hybridized - that was a long time ago - and they think they might revitalize some cultivars that have long since been gone.

So, you should be able to use 3 month old seeds, unless they are infested with bugs.
Reply:That's not very far past expiraation. They are still good.

I've had seeds that are 10 years old sprout for me. Enjoy!
Reply:SURE, YOU SHOULD BE OK........
Reply:I like to do a *potluck* patch in my garden. Old seeds, unidentifiable seeds, just a few left, that kind of thing. It is fun to see what comes up! I have mostly done this with flower seeds, it ends up looking like a wild flower mini-meadow. I would not have any problem at all adding vegetables to the mix.

(=
Reply:I would plant them in seedling pots to see which ones are vialble. The pots which have seeds that don't germinate can be re-used. The ones that do germinate can be planted in a garden when they are big enough to tolerate the transition.

Good luck.

God bless you.
Reply:I always wondered this same question
Reply:You won't get as many plants but then, you won't have to thin as many.
Reply:Actually the seeds found in Egyptian tombs were still good and that was what 2000 years old? So I would say yours are o.k.
