Where can i find a website that offers free flower seeds and ect for gardening?
There are agencies that give away vegetable seeds and support for growing, but it might be harder to get free flower seeds unless you have some to swap. You could try googling "free flower seeds" and the name of your state.

How do I take the seeds from a flower and try to grow more?

Do I wait for them to die or can I plant them now?

How do I take the seeds from a flower and try to grow more?
While I am by no means an expert I wait for the flowers to die back including the seed buds or whatever and when they are dried out I take them off and lay them on newspapers to dry out even more. Then I save them in envelopes and in the next spring plant them. Each individual seeds, not the whole seed pod.. I start almost all my flowers this way. I suppose if you live in a warm place you can plant them right after they are dry but where I live we only have the one growing season each year. (Pennsylvania) Have fun saving your seeds and growing new plants. It can be addicting. LOL

Reply:Don't lop off the flower from the plant until the flower is completely spent. The flower has to grow through its complete cycle before it will seed.Usually the top of the stem leading to the dead flower has shriveled a bit and the center will generally have the seeds in it.

Get an airtight jar or bottle-like a prescription bottle that's clean and put the seeds in that. Some people use zip lock baggies. You'll be able to tell the seeds. I'd wait until next spring to plant them however.

http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=aV2...

i want this flower but i dont want to buy just the seeds.

Where can i buy this Flower (Cleome "White Queen") itself or in a vase. I dont want the seeds...?
Cleome does not lend itself to transplanting. Generally, you just plant the seeds where you want the flower to grow.

Also, you don't find them available as cut flowers at the florists, because they die quickly once cut.

The best way to enjoy them is to throw some seeds in your garden where you would like them to grow. (literally - they self seed very well, and when I want to expand where they grow, I just take seeds, and toss them where I want.)

Probability. flower seeds! help me please! =)?

two flower seeds are randomly selected from a package that contains 5 seeds for red flowers, and 3 seeds for white flowers.

a) what is the probability that both seeds will result in red flowers?

b) what is the probability both colors are represented?

c) what is the probability both seeds are white flowers?

Probability. flower seeds! help me please! =)?
Since there are 8 seeds in the package,

there are (8)(7)/2=28 possible two seed combinations.

This is because there are 8 seeds for the first choice, times 7 seeds for the second choice, divided by 2, since there are two different orders that you can select each pair of seeds.

Of those 28 combinations, (5)(4)/2=10 combinations will both be red,

(3)(2)/2=3 will both be white, and

(5)(3)=15 combinations including both colors.

To answer your question,

a) p=10/28

b) p=3/28

c) p=15/28

Notice that when I figured the probability that both colors would be represented, I paired the 5 red seeds with the 3 white seeds to yield 15 combinations.

When figuring the combinations of just white seeds, and just red seeds, I divided by two to keep from counting each pair of seeds twice.
Reply:assume without replacement.

there are 8 seeds total.

a) the probabity of picking a seed that is for red flowers is 5/8. After one seed is picked out, there are 7 seeds left and 4 out of which are seeds for red flowers. That gives you the probability of picking a second seed that is also for red flower is 4/7

P = (5/8) * (4/7)

P = 5/14

b) both colors are presented. One for red flowers and one for white flowers

for red flower: P = 5/8

one seed is picked out, 7 are left. and 3 of them are for white flower

since order does not matter, there are two ways you can pick the two seeds

Red and white

white and red

P = 2 (5/8) (3/7)

P = 15/28 %26lt;== answer

c) same concept

P = (3/8) (2/7)

P = 3/28 %26lt;== answer

5/8 times 3/7= 15/56+15/56=30/56=15/28

3/8 times 2/7= 6/56= 3/28
Reply:a) ( 5/8 x 4/7 ) = 5/14

b) ( 5/8 x 4/7 ) + ( 3/8 x 2/7 ) = 0.03827

c) (3/8 x 2/7) = 3/28

Sun flower seeds?

My sun flowers are just coming to the end. How do i take the seeds from the middle and how do i store them in the winter months so i can plant them next year.

Sun flower seeds?
cut the top once the flower petals have fallen and leave it on a plate, face down for a day or two. after setting, tap on the back of the flower head and let the seeds fall. store them in a dry, dark place until ready to plant in Spring
Reply:put the head of the plant in a bucket and let the seeds fall out on there own. keep the seeds in a dry place and dont them dry out. make sure there not exposed to any moister because they will go moldy and bee no good for the following year.
Reply:Just thought I would mention that earwigs may be inside the head of the flower so whatever way you choose to get seeds out don't do it indoors !!!! Have fun ;)
Reply:cut the heads off and put them somewhere dry, when you see that all the seeds are fully formed on the head, remove them, discard the head. then all you do is keep them in a dry place until you need them preferably in a paper bag. have fun
Reply:Agree with answers so far but can I suggest that you might consider leaving one or two seed heads on your bird table for the birds? Just cut off the plant close to the base of the head and leave the heads lying seeds upwards. The birds will really appreciate this and you'll still have loads off the other seed heads for planting next year.

How Do I Grow Pansies From Seeds In A flower Pot?

Could someone give me the steps, so that I can follow them.

How Do I Grow Pansies From Seeds In A flower Pot?
Morning sun, pm shade. place a strip of saran wrap over the pot to create a greenhouse effect. Use a mild mixture of miracle gro and water.(after they begin to sprout, use the miracle gro plant food sticks! (They're $1 or so, then only use water). Never pour miracle gro into the green plant itself, it will burn it. make sure you use good potting mix and not cheap stuff. They should also be exposed to the pollen (which is shedding right now so lose the saran wrap or create holes for the pollen to get in........)

Are flower bulbs the same as flower seeds?

Are flower bulbs the same as flower seeds?

About the same as onions are from peas. One is a bulb and the other a flower seed.

The bulb is just a fattened leaf base growing on a bit of chunky stem. From this stem comes the flower bud too. When the flowers bloom, they can set seed too. You can also plant these seeds and get new plants from them. When the new plants are big enough, they send their food into the bases of their leaves to form another bulb again.

Other flower seeds make plants -- big ones like giant trees, small ones like grass seeds, and so many in between. Some of them will grow into plants that will eventually make bulbs too. Like onions and lilies and tulips.

But don't forget that bulbs started life from a flower seed too.

Are flower bulbs the same as flower seeds?
No, they are very different. Many flowers with bulbs also produce seed, which is hard to grow, therfore most flowering bulbs are grown from bulbs. The bulb is sort of an adaptation of roots and stems, as far as I know. The seeds are produced in the ovary of the flower.
Reply:They sort of are, but sort of not. Both bulbs and seeds produce flowers, but, some flowers grow from seeds, other flowers grow from bulbs.

Flowers like daffodils and tulips grow from bulbs. If you plant bulbs, you'll want to dig the bulbs up in the fall (after they have flowered) every few years, separate them, and replant them. They reproduce by making little baby bulbs off the main one (kind of like cloves of garlic), and you can separate them, and plant many more. In fact, after a few years, you should do this, because I think that bulbs get less productive the "clumpier" they get. I find them the most satisfying, because most of them come up quickly, and change every day. Also, a lot of them are spring flowers, so they mark the beginning of the garden.

Other flowers reproduce using seeds, which generally come from the center of the flower itself. There are three types of flower seeds; perennial, annual, and biennial.

I don't know a lot about biennials. They don't flower until the second year, and have always seemed like too much trouble to me.

Annuals are seeds that only produce flowers over one season. They tend to bloom for a longer period. They are often sold in flats (more expensive) at garden shops while already in bloom.

There is a subset of annuals which are called self seeding annuals. This means that the seeds will drop and repropagate themselves. I've had luck with sunflowers coming back year after year, in the weirdest places, as birds pick them off and drop them.

Perennials come back every year, and are really the cheapest way to go. One of my favorites is the black eyed susan.

Other flowers grow from corms, rhizomes and tubers. Wikipedia has a great section on plant reproduction.
Reply:Bulbs are, essentially, a permanent root - they will re-grow every year from the same plant. Seeds germinate, sprout, mature, then die. If that plant produces seeds AND if those seeds drop to the ground AND those seeds germinate next season, you'll get a replacement plant.
Reply:No they are not the same.
Reply:Bulbs are nice because they come back year after year and even multiply. Seeds die out after one season.

The seed capsules tend to go a pale green when they are ready for harvesting, and must be semi-dry and beginning to split open before seed is collected.

Well, how many plants do you want to have? normally one or two per pot is enough but it depends on the type of plant. I use card box eggsboxes to grow seeds and once i have a nice little plant, I repot it in its final pot.

I planted Poopy flower seeds and nothing happen. I live in texas. Are these hard to grow?

I assume you mean poppy seeds?

Poppys are notoriously tough to start from seed and tough to transplant. At least they are in our area here in SD. Once you've got them going, though, they'll take care of themselves.

Try storing them in the fridge for a couple weeks before planting. Cold temps help prepare the seeds for germination. Make sure you have a well-prepared seed bed that's free of weeds, plant at the proper depth and water, water, water.

I planted Poopy flower seeds and nothing happen. I live in texas. Are these hard to grow?
Most poppy seeds just have to be scattered on the surface of the raked soil and pressed firmly. They belong to the light germinators, that is, they need light to germinate. If your seeds were sown too deeply, then they might have failed because of the lack of ight. The only other thing that I can think of is that birds picked them up before they had the chance to grow.
Reply:do you mean POPPY??

no they are easy to grow.
Reply:Poppies need a strong winter freeze to thrive. Your zone in TX may just be too warm for them. The do NOT like to be transplanted, and they are notoriously difficult to start from seed. Yes, they're touchy, but I agree with you, quite beautiful. Try freezing or refrigerating the seed for 6 weeks before you plant them and see if that helps you.
Reply:why would you want shitty flowers
Reply:I have never heard of poopy flowers, poppies on the other hand are easy. Just keep them moist.
Reply:If you just planted them then you are a bit late because the seeds need cool temps to germinate. Poppies typically bloom early summer and are done by mid summer. They reseed themselves freely and if you leave the area undisturbed you may get poppies next spring. Good luck

Planting expired flower and vegetable seeds.?

I have some seeds that have expired. The date is 11/07. Should I wast my time planting them or just toss them out. They less than three monthst past thier expiry date.

Planting expired flower and vegetable seeds.?
You will probably have less germination percentage. I have used expired seeds with no problems before.
Reply:Hey Kait,

You have some good answers already. Old seeds that are rare are worth planting past expiration.

At Monticello (Thomas Jefferson's home), archaeologists are excavating to see if they can find rare seeds that President Jefferson had hybridized - that was a long time ago - and they think they might revitalize some cultivars that have long since been gone.

So, you should be able to use 3 month old seeds, unless they are infested with bugs.
Reply:That's not very far past expiraation. They are still good.

I've had seeds that are 10 years old sprout for me. Enjoy!
Reply:SURE, YOU SHOULD BE OK........
Reply:I like to do a *potluck* patch in my garden. Old seeds, unidentifiable seeds, just a few left, that kind of thing. It is fun to see what comes up! I have mostly done this with flower seeds, it ends up looking like a wild flower mini-meadow. I would not have any problem at all adding vegetables to the mix.

(=
Reply:I would plant them in seedling pots to see which ones are vialble. The pots which have seeds that don't germinate can be re-used. The ones that do germinate can be planted in a garden when they are big enough to tolerate the transition.

Good luck.

God bless you.
Reply:I always wondered this same question
Reply:You won't get as many plants but then, you won't have to thin as many.
Reply:Actually the seeds found in Egyptian tombs were still good and that was what 2000 years old? So I would say yours are o.k.

If dandelions produce seeds asexually, then what is the point of the bright yellow flower?

I mean, a bright yellow flower is supposed to attract insects for pollination. However, dandelions don't need pollination to reproduce -- they produce seeds asexually, resulting in their progeny being clones of the mother. Could the flower be a remnant of their evolutionary past? or do some dandelions reproduce sexually?

If dandelions produce seeds asexually, then what is the point of the bright yellow flower?
Not all dandelions reproduce through apomixis; in fact, the incursion (relatively recently) of the European dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) into Japan has resulted in hybridization with Asian dandelions and, because of the shorter pollen tube produced by TAOF also means that it can "block" native pollen and prevent fertilization.

But I digress. Well, not really. So you can see from its congeners that some dandelion species reproduce sexually. So it's likely TAOF reproduced sexually in the past, but the ability of apomictic species to reproduce rapidly without any others of its species around would be such a great advantage in a tasty-flowered long-distance-seeding plant that the asexually repsoducing ones would survive.

And there's still some mutation and DNA transcription "errors" in meiosis that can result in differences between offspring and parents, even without sex.
Reply:Dandelions self-pollinate to reproduce their seeds, thus having their mother and father in the same plant. Scientists believe that the flower is indeed a remnant of its evolutionary past; they believe that dandelions began self-pollinating only in recent years. Report It

Reply:Perhaps the color yellow is a warning color to animals that would eat the blossom before it goes to seed? I mean, if yellow means poison, or bad taste to an animal...that could protect the blossom.
Reply:Dandelions do not asexually produce seeds. They are self-pollinators. You can't really see it w/o a dissecting microscope, but the carpel is surrounded by a tube of fused stamens. When the flower is ready for fertilization, the carpel grows out of the stamen tube and along the way picks up pollen.
Reply:Creatures eat it, and the seeds get passed on.
Reply:apparently, they need to expand their genetic code to continue to evolve... I would think this would be common knowledge
Reply:God made it that way and who really cares

But, I think its because dandelions are wind pollinated and they have to have a way to release their seeds.
Reply:Its the advantage and disadvatage of each method of reproduction.

Eg. assexual reproduction is much more rapid than sexual and only needs 1 parent...so they are clones of that parent (being geneticall identical to that parent).

disadvatage is that this genetic similarity means they have the same resistance to diseases, environmental conditions (eg drought, water logging) or to damage eg root damage, browsing.

Its in the best interest of the plant to also combine it genes with others to get more diverse offspring. THis means there is a greater chance that more will survive in extreme conditions or they will be genetically better and therefore produce more offspring and "populate the world".

Disdvantage is it requires energy to produce flowers, needs 2 parents and is slower than assexual.

Depending on the situation, the plants will do either and/or both.
Reply:I believe it has to do with adaptation for survival. There are several instances of weeds that have adapted by taking on the characteristics of plants around them so that they might thrive instead of being eradicated.

When will stores in northeast USA start carrying flower and veggie seeds?
Oh my! You're anxious just like me...I can't wait to start gardening too :)

I just picked up 10 packets of seed today...Petunias, Butterfly bush, Columbine, Zinnia, and several others...you should be able to do the same at your local nurseries or garden centers now! :)
Reply:here in mass some stores do.. but your better off ordering from a magazine
Reply:between now and Feb 20 they hit Walmarts across the northeast. 2 four sided racks of flower and veggie seeds per store.
Reply:Now. Go check Lowe's and Wal-mart. Local greenhouses, soon, maybe next month.
Reply:In that area..i would think they would be coming into stores and all around late Feb. to first part of March...just be patient...they are coming!!!

Happy Gardening!!
Reply:From end Feb or early March. Get them soon, have a beautiful garden, Good luck.
Reply:in NY you can usually start finding seeds in February and Pansy's around March. and by mid April all the bedding plants are around , but the "frost free" safe planting date is not until May 15th so be careful what you put out before that date, or it may get damaged or die.

I have a antique poster of superior flower seeds how do i find out about it?

Check with antique dealers in your area, specifically any who deal in "ephemera". If they don't, they might know who does.

In Indiana, I planted flower seeds last week in March. They are now breaking through the dirt.?
You should probably cover them with a layer of newspaper or old sheet since they are coming up all ready. Don't use plastic because it won't let the plants breathe. take the newspaper off when it warms up in the morning. There is a general frost date for all areas of the US. Your local garden shop can tell you when yours is. I know that NE Ohio is about May 10th.

How to plant wild flower seeds???

Do I need special soil or just dig a hole and put the seeds????????????????

How to plant wild flower seeds???
If the seeds were purchased from a local store, or you collected them in a nearby area, you should be able to grow them. There are of course a few exceptions, but generally you should be able to grow them. For most wildflowers the seeds aren't really put into a hole, but rather spread on the soil and then covered with a thin layed of soil, about a 1/4 inch at most. A good rule of thumb for planting most seeds is to plant it twice as deep as the seed . So if you have a pea seed that is 1/4 inch, you would plant it about 1/2 inch deep. So the smaller the seed, the shallower it should be planted. Since most wildflower seeds are small, they should just be scattered on the soil, or covered with a very thin layer of soil.
Reply:it is always a good idea to get some topsoil and mix it with your current soil, it wouldn't hurt to get potting soil that has fertilzer and plant food. for wild flowers you don't need to dig holes for the seeds. Just rake lines in the soil spread your seed then cover with very little potting soil. water everyday twice if it's super hot in your area.
Reply:I have a neighbor that puts the wild flower seeds in ice cube trays fills with water and then freezes. In the spring she scars or barely roughs the area that shes going to plant in then throws the ice cubes with the wild flower seeds in them around the area. She always has a wonderful stand of bluebonnets, Indian paint brush, corn flowers, poppies, etc. After they bloom and start to die back she gathers the seeds and starts the process all over again.
Reply:I always prepare the ground by removing the weeds (that is unless you think the weeds are beautiful and will enhance the area.) Rake or till the soil if removing the weeds, I also like to add some fresh compost to the ground as I am doing this. Then I take my seeds and just broadcast them over the area. I always use more seed than the area/size the package calls for just because of the fact that some are not going to make it and I love the filled in look. After they are broadcasted over the area heavily I take some more fine compost mixed with soil and just sprinkle it over the area lightly. If you are doing a fairly large area sprinkle some seed then cover with soil and move on. You do not want to cover the seeds to thick with the soil I would say a 1/2 inch at the most. After you are done I like to water with a mixture of miracle grow and water really well and then keep the area watered really well after that. It seems to me like it may be too late in the season to be planting wild flowers. You may want to look up what kind of flowers you are planting and the zone you are in and see when you should be planting them. Happy growing
Reply:What kind of wildflowers? Where do you live? What kind of soil do you have? How much sun does your yard get? What is growing there now? We really need more info.

It is rather late in the year to be starting seeds unless you live in an area that has warm weather for at least another 6 months. However, as a start: If you have bought a pack of seed simply labelled "Wildflower Mix", you may be disappointed. Those packs usually contain a mix of annuals and perennials, mostly garden plants not native plants. The annuals will flower this year and may set seed for next year. The perennials may not flower for two or three years. If there are any native seeds, they may not germinate at all as native seeds usually need special treatment before germination.

You should prepare the planting bed as you would prepare any garden: remove weeds and grass, till in some compost, rake smooth and plant. Expect weed seeds to find your nice bed and grow; it will be a challenge to tell the weed seedlings from the "wildflower" seedlings. Alternatively, you could plant the seeds in a seedling tray as you would start any seeds, grow them up and then transplant to your garden bed.

If you are trying to start a large meadow, there are different instructions and it will be a three year project. Click the link below for more info.

Help with flower seeds.....?

I am planting my first flower bed and have lots of different seeds packets ready to plant in peat pellets

Most of these packets have 100+ seeds in the packets and from what i understand you only use 1 or 2 per peat pellet?

So ovciously (unless you have a huge flower bed) you are not going to need even a third of these packets?? Am i right??

Can you keep the seeds for future years??

Help with flower seeds.....?
For your peat pellets, you can actually plant 2 to 3 seeds per pellet, and then pinch off the smaller seedlings.

You are also correct in that you'll only use a small amount of the seed packets for a small garden. If you have friends that garden, share some with them.

You don't specify what types of seeds you have, but let's assume you have annual flowers and herbs.

PERENNIAL seeds are another matter, requiring a process called cold stratification to germinate.

The best way is to place seeds in airtight plastic containers, glass jars or plastic zipper bags at a cool room temperature that is dry and dark.

You can store your seeds in their seed packets or in an envelope that you've labeled with the name and germination date.

Depending on the plant, seeds stored this way will last a year or two. ..some can even last several years or more.

Also, it's very important to keep seeds dry, as any moisture will encourage the seeds to start flowering.

You might put a small packet of silica gel in with your seeds to keep moisture out.

One last thought, do you have a heat mat to place under your peat pot tray?

Seedlings sometimes can acquire what is called 'damping off' disease, caused by watering and cold temps--they'll need the heat mat to encorage germination as well.

A plant grow light is also helpful once your seeds start sprouting. You can buy both at a good garden center, online, or through a seed catalogue such as Parks.

Sorry for the long answer--good luck with your seedlings, it's a fun way to start gardening!
Reply:They seeds might last longer with proper storage.

What you need to do is join the Yahoo

Group open the link and see.

You can exchange seeds.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sgcollecto...
Reply:there is usuallyu a use by date on the packet --- but some seeds you may have bought --- will self seed ( ie zinnias , marigolds etc ) but even if the use by date is say 2010 --- if kept in the right conditions and not opened at all --- it would be fair to say you'll get at least another coulple of years out of them . good luck .
Reply:Sure you can keep them for later use. There is usually an expiration date on the package -- it's just a guideline. At a recent Archaeological dig a 3000 year old fig seed of an extinct variety was found.....it germinated and grew. Also I've planted 4-5 year old seeds that were still viable.

I planted Moss Rose flower seeds, they have come up but are not blooming, why?

If they have begun to set bloom buds, they should be blooming soon. If they have not, then they are not getting enough sun, and you may be watering them too much. Portulacas bloom best if allowed to run dry. They are a drought resistant plant that likes it hot.

I planted Moss Rose flower seeds, they have come up but are not blooming, why?
maybe because it's not its season yet
Reply:Do they have flower buds on them? If not it may just be to early for them to bloom. If they do have blower buds and are still not blooming are they in the sun. They will not bloom in the shade.

Anyone have a recommendation or a company to avoid. I bought Burpee two years ago because they are local and it was a disaster.

thank you!

I like Pinetree Seeds in Maine. They sell in smaller packages, more suitable for home gardens, and at low prices. I have always had good germination rates from them.

That being said, you might like to check out Fedco Seeds. They are a cooperative, and are very reasonable, and they also have a website with lots of information about gardening and varieties.

To compare companies Dave's Garden site has a great comparison of mail-order companies based on user-ratings of their products.
Reply:If your in eastern Canada Vesseys seeds is really good. I've planted 3 year old beans and they germinated better than the ones I bought at the store.
Reply:two that I use all the time and have good luck with are "Thompson %26amp; Morgan" and "Park seed" I have used Burpee and had fairly good luck with their seeds but it seems some years certain seeds do not do good and the next year great. Both the companies named will replace seed for you if for some reason you get a short seed -package.

Another good one is Sieger Seed's. I have ordered a lot of seeds from them and have no problems.

How to collect seeds from flowers and what part of the flower do you get the seed?

Do appreciate an honest answer please

How to collect seeds from flowers and what part of the flower do you get the seed?
move they dead flower bulbs pedals and put your had underneath the middle. then shack it a little bit and some should come out
Reply:Well I have Zinnias %26amp; Marigolds in my garden and as the blooms die and dry out the petal fall off and what is left are the seeds. If i pull the blooms off too early the seeds are white or thin..But after waiting for the blooms to die all the way the seeds will be full and black or dark brown. Zinnia seeds are very obvious though and not all flowers are so cooperative.
Reply:Different plants will have different ways to collect seeds some might fall to the ground and others the seeds are inside the flowers or in pods. You have to decide on the plant you want to propagate.
Reply:This depends on the type of flowers. Some seeds are formed in a seed pod and others are formed as dried blooms. Mostly, seeds form where the flower was.

Go to a garden store in your town %26amp; talk to them. Plants are day-sensitive, etc. Things manage to go thru a cycle in the 4-month Arctic summer, things manage to survive the 9-month Texas year.
Reply:Flower seeds are relatively easy sprouters. Just remember to always check out the date of packing or the expiry date in order to have a greater probability of germination.

Reply:well it is easy i have them outside but i plant them in my green house and they germinate within 5 days on average then they bloom in about 12 weeks only a few of them diddnt come up and i plant them when the packet tells me to
Reply:I have fair luck. I subscribe to the philosophy of the Farmers Almanac. I plant by the moon phases and I never plant before the Kentucky Derby, May. May is when the earth has warmed enough so the seed can germinate and the hard cold rains have gone(for the most part) Seeds need warmth, protection, light and food. Good luck

I put some flower seeds in pots and theres no sign of growth?

I got them free with a magazine (Flowers i think) and lightly watered them every 3 days. That was 16 days ago

I put some flower seeds in pots and theres no sign of growth?
Wow. You've got a range of answers.

Some seeds would have germinated by now, if the seeds were fresh (always in question when they're freebies) and some wouldn't. Some seeds need to be scratched (Scarified) or soaked before planting. I'm guessing you followed package instructions, so scarification probably wasn't required for your seeds.

For most annual flowers, you would place the seeds on top of some good quality potting medium, press lightly over them, so they make good soil contact, and then sprinkle a little more soil over the top. If the seeds were bigger, like nasturtiums, one would press them deeper into the soil, but not much. Gently, thoroughly water the soil and put pots in a warm place. The seeds do not need sun to germinate, but rather warm, moist conditions. If you can't keep up with watering, as another answerer said, put the pots in plastic bags, or use plastic wrap to tightly cover them. This will conserve the moisture and save you some time with watering. (All this said, most seeds do not do well in soggy soil, so don't overdo it!)

When the seeds germinate, then is the time natural sunlight, or properly timed broad spectrum lamplight is essential.

It may be too late for this batch of freebies, but don't let that stop you trying again!
Reply:Water them thoroughly and put a bag over the top.Seeds are not staying wet enough to germinate...
Reply:Perhaps you put them too far down.
Reply:you need to put compost or dirt in the pot first!
Reply:If your not water the seeds everyday then they may not grow, they're likely to take around a week or so to grow depending on what the seeds are suppose to grow into.
Reply:Make sure you have good soil in the pots. Sunlight is critical as well. Some seeds need fertilizer.
Reply:the birds have ate them,...
Reply:the seeds might be old or emtpy,,,,,over time they dry out inside and there's nothing to grow from.....
Reply:They are duds, or you are!
Reply:chia pet?
Reply:try water
Reply:Do you still have the seed packet? If so, did you read the instructions on the back when planting your seeds? Some flowers/plant are persnickety little things and will need varied conditions to grow. For example, poppies can be notoriously difficult to get to germinate because they need to do so in the cold (rather than in sun and warmth like other plants).

My suggestion would be to find the packet if you can and see if you did what it said to do. Also, check the number of days until germination on the packet. It may just be that they haven't germinated yet and you'll have to wait a while.
Reply:Did you plant them the right way up?

they might of grown down under.
Reply:It's best to do some research on what type of plants seeds you are planting. Some seeds need more sun than others to germinate. Some seeds need to be covered by a little bit of soil and some don't. Some will germinate in a week or less and some will take much longer. Some need to be winterized or scarified and take a lot more work. Also, it's important to water thouroughly the first couple of days so the seed coat does not dry out.
Reply:Make sure there is growth media like soil in the pots,
Reply:it all depends what kind of seeds they were and it maybe ones that only come next year.check your packet for details!good luck.

What veg and flower seeds can i grow this time of the year in my unheated greenhouse please?

I think it would have been best to start some seeds off a couple of weeks ago, really. But, I'm in the same boat as you! I started off some corn salad seeds today, and I think you could still do -

spring onions

coriander

lettuces (cold weather tolerant variety)

er

maybe carrots?

I have swiss chard, that I started a few weeks ago . . . .

Flower seeds - well I have lots of lobelia that self seeded all over the place, they are growng away lovely and if there is no heavy frost I think they will survive; winter pansies for sure.

That's a start eh?!

What veg and flower seeds can i grow this time of the year in my unheated greenhouse please?
Try Pak choi, and Mizuma, and some of the other oriental vegetables. Young leaves can be used for salads and the plants will mature early next year.

Rocket takes off fast, and spring onions (white lisbon) planted now, and given a high nitrogen feed in February will repay the effort with a crop ready before you want to use your greenhouse for other things next summer.

As far as flowers are concerned cyclamen from corms will start up well at this time of the year, and there are all the spring flowering bulbs, which will come on well in an unheated greenhouse.

Good Luck
Reply:Where do you live, this is vital. But probaly very little, some winter squash.

I planted some flower seeds in all fertilizer recently amd now am having problems wih maggots in the fertilize
I am not sure what you are calling fertilizer? If it is composted Manure then Ya, it might attract flies and their larvae is a maggot worm! No it is not good for your seeds because if the compost is still strong enough in odor to attract flies then it is too strong for your seeds to germinate and will burn them to death, with the possible exception of squashes and gourds!

Massive doses of water to leach the soil and treatments of LIQUID LIME are the only solutions I know to that problem!
Reply:Fertilizer? Do you mean compost pile of old grass and vegie clippings? You'll want to transplant the flowers. As the vegetation in the compost decomposes, it creates heat that will harm your flowers. Just plunk them in the dirt or in containers. good luck
Reply:Well, that's because the flies have laid eggs in it. You know flies are attracted to sh--- like that.

Doesn't it smell terrible.?

Has anyone collected and replanted seeds from the pod of the Datura Trumpet flower??

I have a beautiful Datura white trumpet flower which has a couple of seed pods on it. What is the best way to keep the pods/and or seeds for replanting next year?? I live in a climate where the plant will die over winter. Any help with this, would certainly be appreciated.

Has anyone collected and replanted seeds from the pod of the Datura Trumpet flower??
Cool, because I just did the same thing! I cut open the pods (wash your hands thoroughly after!) and kept the seeds in a cup, shaking it every so often to dry them evenly. Just keep the seeds in the cup in a dry place (away from animals, as they're poisonous) until ready for planting in the Spring. Don't keep them in a sealed Ziplok bag, as they will either mold or sprout. And don't keep the seeds in the whole pod because they also have a tendency to mold. I dried a pod's worth of seeds a month ago, and then planted some indoors to force - they're coming up beautifully. Yours should do the same! Good luck!
Reply:Yes we collect our own seed each year, we also dig up the root ball and put in a large pot which is kept dry and in a conservatory, then we sow the seed and plant the root ball out after the last frost of spring
Reply:Put them in a Brown paper bag and keep in a dry place over winter and plant out in Spring.

How do i germinate passion flower (passiflora caerulea) seeds?

It says that i should start the seeds 10-15 weeks before the last frost and they should be soaked for 24 hours and prechilled before seeding. They also say that they are perrennials and they are hardy in zone 5, and i should bring them indoors for winter. I live in zone 5. I don't get that if they are perrennials and they are hardy in zone 5 why should i bring them in for winter?

How do i germinate passion flower (passiflora caerulea) seeds?
There are ways to improve the keeping qualities of passiflora seed but, in general, it is best to use fresh seed which germinates readily. Seed that has been stored for any length of time can take up to 12 months to germinate with less than 2 per cent chance of success.

To improve germination, lightly sandpaper the seeds on one or both sides using fine sandpaper, then soak them in tepid water for 24 hours. Sow 2-5mm deep in peat or soil based seed compost. Temperature is probably the most important factor in germination, ideally at 20 degrees C (68F) for 16 hours and 30 degrees C (86F) for 8 hours each day. If this is not possible, then a constant temperature of 26 degrees C (79F) is advisable. Using this technique fresh seed germinates in two to four weeks and older seed in four to eight weeks, but 12 to 48 weeks is not exceptional.

Having germinated your seed and over wintered your young plants, your next goal is to get them flowering. As we know only to well, many plants grown from seed can take years to flower. Passion flowers are no exception. Some species are said not to flower until they are 10 or 20 years old. I don't believe this, but have had some passion flowers that have not flowered for eight years. If you have grown P.caerulea from seed and found it reluctant to flower - sorry! Some seedlings never do.

Although Passion flowers are considered hardy in USDA zones 5-9, they should be planted in a protected location and mulched heavily if severe cold threatens. The top growth is killed back by frost, but 'pops' back to life in the Spring.
Reply:" I live in zone 5. I don't get that if they are perrennials and they are hardy in zone 5 why should i bring them in for winter?"

:-) Me neither, as far as I'm concerned passion fruit vines are not a suitable plant for permanent container growing. I don't go much on the pre chilling either. Passion fruit seed are not difficult to grow, but the seed has a very hard outer coat and takes a while to germinate sometimes. Where I live we get a couple of light frosts a winter and temperatures in the thirties most of summer.

I'd plant them a cm deep in seed trays cover with plastic film and keep damp. In hot weather i'd keep them in the shade. snails will eat new germinations to the point you never knew it happened, so some protection needed there.

Good luck :-)
Reply:once you get them started the coldness of the winter will kill them as they are only little and need sunlight to make them grow, so place them in a window for the sunlight and keep them watered
Reply:They wont flower if you don't

What would happen if you mix different flower or plant seeds together?

Would you end up with a new kind of flower or plant?

What would happen if you mix different flower or plant seeds together?
Seeds don't have sex. Pollination is over and the seeds are who or what they will be. You will get different plants from different seeds. Some wil make it, some won't but nothing will happen while they "sleep" together.
Reply:No, you just end up with different kinds of plants growing together in the pot (or garden).
Reply:yea, i've done this before and u get a beautiful flower - sometimes the plant actually will have both flowers, it's rather cool, go ahead and try it
Reply:The original plants would have to grow, flower and cross polinate if possible to creat a new plant type.

If you plant flower seeds to deep will they still eventually come up?

I planted them to deep i guess. it's been about three weeks and the only thing coming up so far are weeds.

If you plant flower seeds to deep will they still eventually come up?
It depends on the seeds. Some of them need a bit of light to germinate and some will rot if they are too deep.

Follow the instructions on the seed packets, or look them up on the Internet.
Reply:It probably would depend on what kind of seed you planted, if you planted a seed that was very fine, it might not. If it was a sunflower seed, you might have better luck. I tend to plant them too deep also, probably why I don't have much luck with seed. Also depends on what kind of dirt you have and how you are watering.

Flower seeds?

I had some live flowers in my room, and now they're wilted. Can I take the seeds out right away and plant them, or do I need to wait and dry them for a while?

Did you pollinate the flowers? If not, then the seeds probably aren't viable.
Reply:Wait and let them dry a bit. Then you can transplant them. =]
Reply:Let them dry for about a week or so. Lay them on a sheet of paper towel or newsprint to dry.

Are there flower seeds that will take root simply by being thrown down (without having to plant)?

If so, could you provide examples? Zone 6.

I'm looking to do something like this (with a mixture of grass %26amp;/or clover):

Reply:you can plant 4 o"clock seeds now for bloom in the summer. It takes them awhile to germinate.they will make a root in a couple of years......Touch me knots, purple cone flower.......
Reply:is not this is what nature does you can help take a hard rake and pull the rake once to the north and then to the south across the ground
Reply:Almost anything will, if you have enough seeds. Some will sprout, and if you put down a gazillion, that's enough to have flowers. That's how the plants do it themselves, after all. However, they don't have to pay $2.95 for a small quantity of seeds.

I would pull out whatever's big and would compete, rake the area so the seeds can get into the soil, spread the seed, and rake again so the seed is turned under. Then water regularly until they sprout. That's the lazy-gardener version of actually planting the area "the right way".

I do this when I have a few handsful of wildflower seeds. It works for black-eyed susans, coneflowers, pinks, wild shasta-type daisies. It also works for the more vigorously seed-producing garden flowers, like cosmos, calendula, and marigold. You can gather a lot of seed from them if you let the last blooms of the season go to seed.
Reply:I'm going to send you back to your very own web site that you posted and there you will find a seed packet for the "Fleur de lawn"

since it is obviously exactly what you are looking for. You can purchase the seed packet right here.

rain roots

In the center of a lily flower, there are small, slightly rectangular seeds that seem to float in the center..

Float in the center on very delicate stems...Are these the seeds of the flower? What are they and what is their purpose?

That is the Anther. This is the part of the stamen that produces and contains pollen. It is usually on top of a long stalk that looks like a fine hair.

Reply:The stamen (from Latin stamen meaning "thread of the warp") is the male organ of a flower. Each stamen generally has a stalk called the filament (from Latin filum, meaning "thread"), and, on top of the filament, an anther (from Ancient Greek anthera, feminine of antheros "flowery," from anthos "flower,").

The anther is usually composed of four pollen sacs, called microsporangia. The development of the microsporangia and the contained haploid spores, (called pollen-grains) is closely comparable with that of the microsporangia in gymnosperms or heterosporous ferns. The pollen is set free by the opening (dehiscence) of the anther, generally by means of longitudinal slits, but sometimes by pores, as in the heath family (Ericaceae), or by valves, as in the barberry family (Berberidaceae). It is then dropped, or carried by some external agent — wind, water or some member of the animal kingdom — onto the receptive surface of the carpel of the same or another flower, which is thus pollinated.

Typical flowers have six stamens inside a perianth (the petals and sepals together), arranged in a whorl around the carpel (pistil). But in some species there are many more than six present in a flower (see, for example, the spider tree flower, below). Collectively, the stamens are called an androecium (from Greek andros oikia: man's house). They are positioned just below the gynoecium. The anthers are bilocular, i.e. they have two locules. Each locule contains a microsporangium. The tissue between the locules and the cells is called the connective.

In an immature, unopened flower bud, the filaments are still short. Their function is then to transport nutrients to the developing pollen. They start to lengthen once the bud opens. The anther can be attached to the filament in two ways:

* basifixed : attached at its base to the filament; this gives rise to a longitudinal dehiscence (opening along its length to release pollen)

* versatile : attached at its center to the filament; pollen is then released through pores (poricidal dehiscence).

Stamens can be connate (fused or joined in the same whorl):

* monadelphous : fused into a single, compound structure

* diadelphous : joined partially into two androecial structures

* synantherous : only the anthers are connate (such as in the Asteraceae)

Stamens can also be adnate (fused or joined from more than one whorl):

* epipetalous : adnate to the corolla

* didynamous : occurring in two pairs of different length

* tetradynamos : occurring as a set of six filaments with two shorter ones

* exserted : extending beyond the corolla

* included : not extending from the cor

Potato plants produces seeds, flower, fruit yet do not grow from them?

well the tops arent what you eat..you eat the roots of that plant..same with a carrot..you are eating the roots....

Potato plants produces seeds, flower, fruit yet do not grow from them?
Interesting. I never thought about that. From what I've just read, potatoes can grow from the seeds the plants produce. It's just usually done the other way--planting part of the potato itself.
Reply:same thing with tomatoes, if you don't plant it into the ground, your limiting their growing space so they stop growing / or don't grow as big. Just like an iguana, if you put it into a small cage, it will never get bigger than the length of the cage. same thing

Combination of jellybean seeds for a flower in toontown?

When I'm making my garden in toontown and I want to make a flower, it doesn't let me plant a combination for a flower. It just lets me do 1 jellybean seed per flower. How do you do a combination for a flower. Plus do you get a new Cattalog every week in toontown?

Combination of jellybean seeds for a flower in toontown?
You do get a new cattelog every week. One of my toons comes every Wednesday, and the other two come on Friday.

The flower situation: You can only plant one bean for right now. Once you have mastered the one bean, then it will move you up to two, then three, etc all the way up to 8.

The only way to move up is to plant your one jellybean, there are a total of 5 plant species for one jellybean, 2 beans, 3 beans and so on.

Plant a bean in every place you can in your garden and water. The next day your plants should bloom, water them and pick them. Then plant again, keep doing this everyday until a message pops up telling you, you can now plant two jellybeans and so on.

If you open your schitcker book and go to the gardening page, you will see you have a watering can, and a shovel.

I can't quite remember but the shovel will say 0/80, once you hit 40/80 it'll let you plant 2 jellybeans, and once you hit 80/80 it'll let you plant 3. Then it moves up 0/160, once you hit 80/160 you can plant 4 and so on.

Hope this helps!
Reply:i think i've tried blue and red and got something
