I live in Northern IL area and the winter was very long so I did get around yet to planting. I have so many veggie and flower seeds and I want a success in the garden. I also have watermelon seeds.
Is it too late here now to plant?
Is it too late to plant seeds here?
Some yes, some no. It is getting a bit late in the spring to plant peas but if it doesn't get hot too soon in June, you'll be okay. With peppers and tomatos, you're better off just buying the plants at this point. However, with herbs, corn, lettuce, carrots, radishes, and almost all annual flowers, now is a great time to plant seeds. Pumpkins, watermelons, and cucumbers like warm soil. You can try them now because of the very nice weather we've had since the end of last month's week of really cold weather. I put mine in last week and the watermelons and pumpkins are already out of the ground but not the cucumbers.
Reply:No! I live in WV and we plant our garden usually Memorial Day weekend every year. You can plant them now. Good luck!
Reply:watermelons and squash should be ok. However growing things like flowers and tomatoes from seed take a long time. My dad grows from seed and he starts seeds indoors in February. Especially in IL I would think you have a pretty short growing season. I like in Alabama and we get stuff out of our garden until October
Reply:no only if you get going now on them then you should be good
