Do not put them in the freezer!!!
If you want to cold stratify them, do it in the fridge. Prolonged freezing can kill them.
As for cold stratification in general, it depends on the type of wildflower. If they come from areas with cold winters, then yes it will help. If they come from warm areas, then it could kill them.
and if you do cold stratify them, wet them first for bestresults - soak them for 12-24 hours in warm water and then place between a wet paper towel or in some spagnum moss and place in the fridge - if you have cinnamon, mix that in too as it will prevent mold or fungus from killing the seeds
Can I put Wild Flower seeds in the Freezer as I do grass seed to help them germinate faster?
You are smart, smelly!
Reply:No, u should use the fridge not the freezer for ur regular seeds! Just put em in a side tray or the chiller compartment! When ur ready to plant the seeds, soak em for at least 12 hours depending on the size of the seed.... no more then 24 hours though!
Reply:yes , and then grow on

I need to know a reciepe for sun flower seeds ,roasted in oven including prep, time and temp.?
also is it best to use parchment paper on cooking sheet to do this
I need to know a reciepe for sun flower seeds ,roasted in oven including prep, time and temp.?
Ingredients: 1 cup Sunflower Seeds
2 quarts Water
l /2cup Salt
Note: For salt free sunflower seeds, rinse seeds and go straight to step # 7.
--------------------------------------...
Preparation Directions:
Add water and salt in a pot or saucepan.
Rinse sunflower seeds and remove any plant and flowerhead matter.
Add sunflower seeds.
Bring water to a boil, then turn down to simmer.
Simmer 1 to 1/1/2 hours.
Drain on a paper towel until dry. Do not rinse.
Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
Spread seeds on a cookie sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes.
Stir frequently.
Remove from oven when they turn slightly brown.
Reply:I assume you mean already shelled seeds? If so use parchment and try 350 degrees C, should only take a couple of minutes, watch them carefully and make sure to spread them on the tray so they lay flat and cook evenly.
Reply:TO ROAST SUNFLOWER SEEDS:
Spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet, and toast them in a 350 degree F oven for about 10 minutes. When the seeds start to swell and the hulls crack, they're ready. Cool and salt to taste.

Can I replant Sunflower seeds from a flower I just picked?
I planted giant sunflowers and a few of them are ready to cut down. If I remove the seeds can I replant them right away
so I will have flowers in a couple of months, or do I have to wait?
Can I replant Sunflower seeds from a flower I just picked?
Yes-- I had done this quite often as a child (also they grew under the bird feeder too). Let the whole thing dry first (you can leave them together just snip off the remainder of the stem) and let harden. Plant them singly and give them about a foot distance between each seed in a fairly moist ground in loose dirt. Water once a day but not too much to drown them! They should grow fairly quickly. You could also start a few seeds in a Dixie cut with dirt inside the house too (did this too). Just make sure you put a little water in it everyday--not too much though- just a small amount and you will see this grow one at a time inside! Good luck with your "growing" knowledge and experience!
Reply:sure you can but you cant be sure if they will grow.couse birds like sunflower seeds a lot.
Reply:you need to let the seeds dry right out and then replant them next spring, they will then do fine but store them in a dry place.
Reply:sorry no, you have to wait until the flower dies on the plant ,store the seeds until it is time to plant them next season
Reply:I dried mine out first.. planted them the following year. But it couldn't hurt to plant a few and see what happens. I'd just save some for next summer in case it doesn't work.
Reply:Sure , depending on two factors. The first being , the seeds from your mother plant, are they fully developed, or are they still light green and small? If t6hey are full size and semi dark, you could dry them out( helps in germination) and plant them for more sun flowers. The second factor depends on your location , If you have 2 more months of temperatures that will occasionally hit 80 degrees, it's OK to plant them, If your September gets lower than 80degrees more often than not , you probally won't get the flowers , which is the only worth wile part of the plant, so wait for next year unless you feel lucky!
Reply:yes. that is how they reproduce. the flower dies. falls to the ground, and the flower carcas helps with fertilizing.
Reply:try it..it should work.

I have just been given some sweet pea seeds (flower). Could someone tell me how to go about growing these?
when do i need to plant them indoors (in peat pots)?
When do i transplant them outside?
I have just been given some sweet pea seeds (flower). Could someone tell me how to go about growing these?
I would just wait til spring and plant them directly outside. They grow quite large so if you have a trelice grow them there! I grew them last spring at work, beautiful flowers, they grow really quickly outside so I would just wait itl about late feb march time!!
Reply:just transplant them into the earth outside your home or in backgard.and start giving water to it and it will start growing itself.
just do a little bit of care of it
Reply:You can plant them outside directly. We do.
Just make sure you plant them after the frost season is over and the ground is not frozen, may have to cover them if unexpected frost is predicted by local wheatherman.
Inside you may want to plant in February or even in January. About two months before you can put them out.
In my area frost can happen even in july.
Reply:Sow your sweet pea sow one seeds indoors any time now.Depending on the size of the pot, plant one in a mini-pot two or more around the edge of larger pots.
Keep the compost slightly moist, without overwatering and the pots in a light position.Sweet peas need to be grown on in reasonably cool conditions and the resulting plants can be planted out around Easter, depending on the locality and the weather at the time.
Don't plant out sweetpeas during frosty, snowy weather or while the soil outside is very wet.
While planting out, provide some twiggy supports (Long prunings from shrums, hazel twigs, privet clippings) sweetpeas will attach by their tendrils and should give you a good show,
Reply:Best time to sow is Autumn Uk once they germinate..outside in cold frame, plant out on well manured ground in spring.Sow in deep pots as they need a strong root system. To get them tall later...nip out the flower buds and tendrils until they reach the desired height.
Reply:soke them over night in water and set them now in doors and plant them out when the threat of frost has gone

After planting flower seeds, should mulch be applied.?
I planted Zinnia flower seeds in the ground. I added about 1 inch of potting soil on top and then another inch of mulch. I was told the seeds would not be allowed to germinate or grow with the mulch on top of the soil. Is that correct?
After planting flower seeds, should mulch be applied.?
I suspect you have put too much stuff on top of the seeds. Usually most seeds want only a 1/4" of covering or less. Do you still have the seed packet? Read the directions.
Mulch is usually not applied until the plants are 3 or 4" high.
Reply:That is correct, you shouldn't mulch until the plants are two or three inches tall.
Reply:Yes, that's correct. You will probably need to replant. When I plant zenias I water the ground first, then place the seeds on top and dust lightly with more soil to keep the seeds in place. Water them daily until they emerge and get their first set of TRUE leaves. Then you will need to thin and transplant them (or they will be stunted from being too close together). Check the package for the spacing requirements.
One more tip.....try using dry dog or cat food as a slow release fertilizer, but don't over do it. Just sprinkle it on top and work it into the soil. I like to give it time to break down before planting my seeds ~about a week or so is fine (this way the dogs and cats will not be digging up my flowers). Water it daily to aid in the "breaking down" process.
Reply:You mulch to keep seeds from germinating, Add it after your flower seed have sprouted or plant them in a container and plant them and mulch after they have reached a good size. I would strongly recommend this method. You have more control and you can tell what are weed seedlings and which are your flowers..
Reply:You should mix the top soil and the mulch together for the best results!
Reply:I've had good luck with about a 1/2" of potting soil over Zinnia seeds, keep moist until about 4-6" tall..then add the mulch....by adding the mulch first you defeat the purpose

How can i get seeds from an annual flower?
i have a morning glory flower and want to know if there is any way to get the seeds out so i can plant them next year.
How can i get seeds from an annual flower?
The seed pods will turn brown and before you know it, the underneath of the plants will be absolutley littered with these pods. If you don't want the seeds, just let them rest and they will reseed all on their own. I love morninglories but they can take over your yard and are vigorous reseeders. The one year that I did not clean up the pods, I had morning glory coming up everywhere. OK if you want morning glory everywhere. I preferred to have the morninglory in a contained area.
Reply:when the pods are dry and brittle the seeds will be ripe, store in a cool dry place.
Reply:Unless you want to plant them somewhere else-- leave them alone and they'll reseed them selves.
Otherwise, after the vines dry you'll see the seed pods-- there are usually 4 seeds per pod. Pick off the pods, rub them in your hands over some newspaper and pick out the seeds.
Colors-- if you planted all one color-- the seeds will probably be the same color. I planted red, blue, white and pink-- I'm interested in what I get next year.
good luck

How do i take amaryllis seeds from my amaryllis flower.?
I would like to know how to take amaryllis seeds from my amaryllis flower. Any simple ways to do this.
How do i take amaryllis seeds from my amaryllis flower.?
Assuming you mean Hippeastrum? Amaryllis actually comprise a huge genus of diverse plants.
After the flower has died there should be a round pod at the base of the flower and if it contains any fertile seeds it will swell and eventually change colour when it ripens. Once it is ripe the pod will be soft and probably starting to split open of its own accord- you can then remove the pod and take out the seed which will look like small bulbs these can then be planted into potting mix and will grow a shoot which then feeds off the original bulb (food store) while it grows roots and a proper bulb at the base of the shoot.
Reply:As your amaryllis grows it will sprout baby amaryllis'. I think it will really hurt your flower if you were to extract seeds from the bulbs. I would just take care of the one that I have and just wait for the others to grow in.

Where can I get free flower seeds for my garden?
Ask around and see if there is a garden club in your area. There are things like seed exchange clubs. If you can look through some gardening magazines, alot of times they have a section full of people that want to exchange seeds and/or send seed to anyone who writes/emails and asks for it.

I am trying to find out how to harvest impatience flower seeds?
When the flowers die and turn into seed pods, take a paper bag and put the seed pods in it.Put the bag in a cool ,dry, dark place. When Spring arrives ,take the bag and shake it, all the seeds will be in the bottom of bag. Then plant them either out side or in starter trays inside.

they have little pods on them that are full of seeds. you just squeeze them and the seeds will fly out. just put them in an envelope and label them and plant in the spring. beautiful flowers! good luck!

Reply:They won't bloom true to the parent plant. Impatiens (aka: Busy Lizzies) like most french marigolds are hybrids.
By the way, it's IMPATIENS, not impatience. That's what I get when I see incorrect spellings.

How do you get seeds from a Begonia flower, in order to reproduce a certain colour plant next year?
I have a certain red and white begonia, which is a one off amidst the usual pinks and purples. I need to know how and when i can pick the seed from that flower so i can produce the red and white version seperately for next year. Any help greatly welcomed!
How do you get seeds from a Begonia flower, in order to reproduce a certain colour plant next year?
I never got seeds from my begonias? I used to lift the corms for the winter and split them and store indoors in a box of soil for replanting in the spring. I thought that was the only way to do it? That way I preserved all my rare and unusual ones.
Reply:You need to cover the flowers so they are not pollinated by bee's or other insects, then you pollinate a female flower with a male flower from the same plant
Reply:Wouldn't it be easier to take cuttings? Especially off a begonia. Also you're cloning then and it should be more true to the parent plant than a seed where dominant alelles get to have their says iirc. Not a bedding plant expert though so I could e wrong ...
Reply:You won't be able to guarantee the colour of the begonia - but to collect the seed, wait until the flower is faded then tie a paper bag over the flower head, I tend to leave them on the plant as long as possible but then cut the stem off %26amp; hang it upside down in a warm dark place.
The seed is very fine - don't be tempted to touch it with your fingers, you will damage it.
I generally try to sow seed immediately outside (usually into pots though), it then takes as long as nature intends for it to germinate.
Reply:With any plant that you can strike cuttings from, it's best to propagate that way if you want to keep the colour true.
Unless you've managed to keep the plant completely isolated from any other of the same variety, the chances of seed coming out the colour you want is slim.
Reply:Seeds? Begonias? I never knew that but Im off to give it a try. I have usually tried cuttings or bulb preservation. I guess you have tried that too.

How long do flower seeds last?
Kept dry, in their original packets... specifically Blanketflowers (Gaillardia aristata)
Thanks in advance! =)
How long do flower seeds last?
Seeds like that usually go bad after two years with significant loss of germination rate. Still, even if you have a 12 year old pack that's remained in a dry dark closet, you still would be better to plant carefully what you have than chucking it in the garbage.
I actually found some 30 old seed packs that had not been used in a drawer, and planted the whole lot in what I've found is a superior medium.....fine wood mulch or peat moss, kept constantly moist and planted on top, no burial at all and in a shady area and got at least 75 viable seedlings! Which worked out to about 5-8% germination rate.
Had I planted the same fresh, I would probably have hit around the normal 80-90% rate.
Reply:Ive done a survey on my discussion board about packet seeds. I find most dont grow at all anymore.
So did everyone else.
Maybe one plant out of the whole packet.
I quit buying packet seeds.
Reply:Approxmently 1 Year. However I have had seeds for as long as 2 years. If you are saking about grass seed, I have a secret to getting grass off to a great start,
Give it a good soaking with this, it's almost 100% germination evert time.
Start.
Mix in a large container put your in gress seed and then put it in the refrigerator for about 48 hours, then take the seed outside and spread it out on a flat surface, something like your driveway, once they are dry it's time to sow.
Ingredients
1/4 cup of baby shampoo,
1 Tbsp of epsom salts
1 gal. of weak tea water.
heres how to make the tea water
soak a used tea bag and 1 Teas. of dishwashing liquid in a gallon of warm water untill the mix is light brown.
Hope This Helps
Reply:It's possible that they can last a couple of years, but the germination rates drop pretty fast. If they are more than two or three years I wouldn't plan on more than one or two sprouting.
I've had great success with package seeds, but it's important to try and plant them quickly so they are as fresh as possible.

I live in southern Ohio whats the best time to sow my flower seeds outside?
depends the flower, and what they like for temps, and if they can take a frost or not.
Go here http://www.victoryseeds.com/frost/ click on Ohio, and then look at your area, that is your average last frost date. If your last frost date has already happened More than likely your safe to plant anything.

i live in cynthiana, ky which is about 50 miles or so south of cincinnati...depending on how far you are from the border line next weekend, mothers day weekend, is ususally the best time to start planting gardens and annuals.
it very seldom frosts after mothers day weekend but 3 yrs ago it did frost on may 21 but that is rare for it to happen
we always go by mothers day weekend as a rule of thumb every year so there will be no problems

Can I still plant flower seeds that say on package "packed for 2005"?
I have about 20 packs of flower seeds, Burpee brand, I got for free and to save money I was wondering if I planted these if they would still grow even though they were "packed for 2005"...
Can I still plant flower seeds that say on package "packed for 2005"?
Ya know what.. I say try.. whats the worst that could happen?? I planted some seeds a couple of years ago that were lost for over 4 years and they were just fine. Good luck!!
Reply:You could try it but it may not work
Reply:Yes of course but the germination percentage may be lessened. Good luck.
Reply:Personally I have had good luck planting "out of date" seeds. Your germination will not be quite as good as with "fresh" seeds.
The way to check is to put 5 to 10 seeds on a wet napkin. Keep it moist and see how many out of your trial batch sprout.
Or just plant them and let what grows, grow.
Reply:yes, plant them. if seeds are kept in a dry, dark place, and protected from bugs, they will last for several years.
i use my leftover seeds every year. maybe, you will get a slightly lower germination rate than with new ones. not even enough to notice.
Reply:Sure why not? You have nothing to loose, even if you only get half of them you are still ahead, I would say almost all would grow with the right conditions.
Reply:Instead of planting all of them at once, save yourself the effort, take a few of each seed (10). Wet a paper towel and put them on it. Slip the wet seed laddened towel in a zip lock and leave it indoors for a 4-10 days. Open it, if any seeds have sprouted you'll know.
Reply:I planted some sunflower seeds that were packed for last year, and they are growing very well. Try it, what can you lose?
Reply:You can still plant the seeds and it will grow. The packets had to be kept in a dry, dark and cool place. Before you plant it, check the seeds for damage. Damages seeds won't grow.
If you don't want to go through the whole ordeal, in case the seeds doesn't grow : take a few seeds from the packet and put them in moisten cotton wool (water the cotton wool every day) you will soon see them sprouting out. If not, then you know that they have expired.
Reply:You can certainly still plant them, but as already pointed out "it may not work"
Generally with good quality seed packages, better than 90% of the seeds will germinate - as the package becomes older, you can generally expect fewer of the seeds to germinate.
How many of the seeds will germinate depends on the kind of plants, the kind of seed packaging, and the conditions under which the seeds were kept.
If the packages appear to be in good condition (particularly no signs of having been wet) and the seeds appear normal (not moldy, and not already germinated), most of them will probably still grow.
"Pelleted" seeds (the ones with a coating of plant food on each seed) generally will last longer than bare seeds because the seed itself is sealed until the coating is disolved by watering.
I would not use "packed for 2005" seeds in a situation where it was very important that nearly all the seeds germinate (such as a school science project), but for ordinary planting where you would expect to need to thin the plants after they germinate these seeds stand a very good chance of working just as well as brand new seed packages.
Reply:yes... they should still grow.some seeds lose their ability to germinate regardless of age. plant it and it will grow with water and sun.

Planting flower seeds?
My son and I were doing a project to plant seeds and watch them grow. He is 4. Anyway the seeds he picked (I dont remember the name of them) were suppose to grow into beautiful colorful flowers. Its been about 5 weeks now and all that has come up are very thick and long it looks like 3 leaf clovers. I pulled one of them out and they have very long roots. There is no signs of a beautiful flower. What happened?
Planting flower seeds?
Look at the back of the seed packets. They have important info on when and how to plant. Many flowers require a certain temperature or indoor starting before planting outside.
There are lots of very inexpensive seeds available. Why not tell your son that it was a "goof" the first time, and so start over?
Good luck.
Reply:What happened is you haven't waited long enough for the buds. It takes a couple of weeks for them to even show the first growth. Keep the project growing and you can teach your son another lesson in life....patience. Good Luck!

I bought a cheap pack of "Butterfly Mixture" flower seeds?
It contains violets, daisies, coreopis plains, gallardia, etc.
How deep in the soil do I plant them?
Will they grow in a fairly shady area?
I bought a cheap pack of "Butterfly Mixture" flower seeds?
1/8-1/4 of inch of soil covering them.No more. 1-2 inches is way to deep. When I plant mine I rake out the ground I'm planting them in and the scatter the seed and rake over the seeds. This works really well.Butterfly mix is a sunny seed mix , but will do okay in partial shade. It wont do well at all in full shade. It needs at least 2-3 hours full sun a day. Hope I helped.I have 3 lovely flower gardens and butterflys from June to September.
Reply:Daisies, coreposis and gallardia all prefer full, hot sun. The violets can do part-sun.
Rough up your soil and then smooth it out. Spread seed over soil and then bring up 1/4 inch of soil on top. Pat down and water with a misty stream of water so you don't disturb the seed. Keep the seed damp until you start to see sprouts.
Reply:bury 2-3inches down and some shade is ok...not too much!

How Much Soil Do I put In The Flower Pot When Growing Pansies From Seeds?
I have some pansy seeds, that I want to grow into pansies;
Should I fill the entire pot with soil, with the seed underneath?
Or should I put only 1/8- 1/4 inch of soil in the flower pot with the seed underneath?
I just worry that if I fill the entire pot with soil with the seed underneath that the seed might not be able to sprout all the way to the top.

What flower seeds can you plant in a cup and then plant it into soil after it grows?
Nasturtiums are good. I find them easy to grow and transplant and they are quite vigourous growers when in the soil. The also have the advantage of you being able to collect seeds from them when they finish flowering so you can save them for next year. You can keep deadheading them for most of the summer and then towards the end let the go to seed.

Marigolds work well.
Oh, and sunflowers do, too.

I have 5 different kinds of passion flower seeds. what is the best soil medium to grow them in?
Hey Pete,
The following is copied from the first web site:
"Although Passion flowers are considered hardy in USDA zones 5-9, they should be planted in a protected location and mulched heavily if severe cold threatens. The top growth is killed back by frost, but 'pops' back to life in the Spring.
Passion flowers are easy to grow. They need partial to full sun, and will adapt themselves to most well-drained soils. During the growing season, the soil should be kept evenly moist, to ensure good flowering and growth. Apply a balanced (10-5-20) fertilizer in the early spring, and then again six to eight weeks later. Maypops should be planted in early spring. They will benefit by the addition of compost to the planting hole." 1
All of the articles that I read about passion flower say that the soil varries. So, use a neutral Ph and a simple potting soil, you should do great. You might concider soaking your seeds over night.
I like using Peat Pots, typically available in Spring at Wal-Mart in the garden section. You follow the instructions. They expand like a sponge when the are watered, then you put the seed in the center. When the seed sprouts out the top, you simply plant the 1.5 inch peat pots into the area you plan to have the flowers. I do this all the time, it is the easiest way and fairly clean. The pots come in a plastic drain tray with a clear cover to make it like a hot house. Good luck.

Does anyone know how to plant the little packets of flower seeds?
If you DEFINITELY want the seeds to sprout and ultimately flower (which you do, of course) place the seeds on a wet paper towel and put them in an enclosed container, such as an empty margarine dish. Make sure the lid is tight! Put them in a dark closet for about 3 or so days, the heat will encourage them to sprout. Plant them either outside as sprouts or put them in a soil filled Peat-Pot and grow them in doors until the first leaves sprout out. Then plant 'em outdoors and keep them watered for the first couple of weeks. That will provide you with the best chance of success!
Does anyone know how to plant the little packets of flower seeds?
I've planted many seeds from the little packets. Just read the instructions on the packet. The location, depth, watering requirements all depend on what you're planting. There are no general instructions that would apply to everything you could possible plant from seeds. So, check the back of the package.
Reply:Depending on the flower, you need to make sure you live in an area where the soil has warmed up enough. Then you loosen the soil, poke your finger in about 1-2", drop in a few seeds, and cover. Space them about 4-6" apart, water, and see what happens. If you want to just broadcast them over the ground, you can loosen the soil, spread them around evenly, and then throw some more topsoil on top, or just turn the soil lightly to cover the seeds. Good luck
Reply:you dig a hole, pour some water in it to dampen soil, put the seed packet in, cover with dirt, then water top soil, keep soil dampened until your plants come up, then water as needed.
Reply:Well if you plant the little packet of seeds I'm sure you'll NEVER get it to grow but if you open it up and set the seeds slightly in the soil you might be results with regular watering, weeding, and observation for pests. Happy Gardening. Good Luck
Reply:they now sell a tool at your local lawn and garden shop that will dispense these seeds one at a time'
Reply:umm read the directions on there..lol
Reply:depends what you plant. if its wildflowers then choose a sunny location work the soil about 3 inches and sprinkle the seeds and lightly cover and keep moist.
most veggies and fruit are best started in peat pot with "Starter soil mix" dampen soil with a spray bottle and add seeds. then cover to the appropriate depth. and cover with saran wrap so that you can get some air(to avoid molding) and the plants still have enough sunlight to germinate.
Reply:in a row and get some mircal growth

Are Sun Flower Seeds Good For You ?
I have recently started eating them and after a bit of practice I can eat a bag in one sitting because they are so morish. Just wondered if they are good or bad for you.
Are Sun Flower Seeds Good For You ?
Sunflower seeds contain both monounsaturated and poly unsaturated fat, the types of fat that may protect the heart. They are also a good source of Vitamin E, selenium which is often deficient in our diet and other important nutrients such as magnesium, potassium, iron and zinc. Therfore they are definitely good for you!

Reply:Sunflower seeds contain vitamin E and are low in saturated fat, much like the sunflower oil that is often used in baking and frying.
The only bad thing with sunflower seeds that you get in the store is that they may have been soaked in salt water and dried, which gives them that very salty flavor. People on low-sodium diets would be wise to avoid these.
And if you are eating the type with no shell, they also tend to have been salted, but what is worse is that they may have been lightly fried or sprayed with peanut oil to help the salt adhere to them. Peanut oil is high in saturated fats.
Make sure to get the unsalted variety and check the package ingredients.

Do flower seeds expire?
I bought some seeds (for flowers and plants) from walmart and on ebay. There are no expiration dates on any of them and I dont' want to use all of them.
Do seeds actually expire? If I sow my seeds two years from now, will it still work?
Do flower seeds expire?
Technically, they "expire". But in actual practice, they merely are less likely to germinate over time. Seeds are usually labeld with the year on them. Almost all seeds will be pretty reliable for 2-3 years.
A general rule of thumb is that the larger the seed, the longer it will be viable. (beans will last years, tiny seeds give up sooner). But species vary - seeds found in egyptian tombs have been grown after thousands of years of storage! How they are stored will affect thier "shelf life". Cool and dry is key.
I would'nt throw any seeds out - just expect that fewer will sprout as each year passes.
Reply:Saaanen is right about the germination rate falling with time. Most, but not all, seed companies do put an expiration date on seed packs. Depending on the seed in 2 or 3 years the germination rate may be down to only 1 seed in 10 germinates. This would be unsatisfactory and a waste of labor to plant them. If there is no expiration date on the package, I'd get new ones next year. You may have to buy them anyway if they don't come up and then you'll be behind schedule. I don't think it's worth the risk to save a buck or two.
For what it's worth, grass seed is monitored by the USDA and the seed is illegal to sell if it's out of date. You could apply the same reasoning to other seeds. But the risk is yours.
Reply:I get fresh ones every year, just read the date on them.
Reply:Seeds don't expire. Their germination rate goes down. I will use 4 year old bean seeds this year. The only difference is that I will sow them a little bit heavier than I would if they were new.
Reply:put your seeds in a brown paper bag ,in a cool dry dark place they will last longer.
Reply:Seeds don't "expire", however their germination rate decreases with time. For example when you first buy the seeds the germination rate may be 80% (8 out of 10 seeds will grow) the more years that pass, (and also if the seeds haven't been stored properly) the germination rate decreases. Maybe after a couple years only 50% will germinate, etc.
However properly stored seeds can last anywhere from 1 to 5 years. It depends on the type of seed.
To test if your seeds will germinate put how many you want in a pot or the ground, wait a few days and see how many seedlings pop up. If you want more, sow some more seeds, if not, store the rest in a cool DRY place.
Reply:Seeds do expire. Depending on the type of seed and where you store them, the seeds may still be viable after two years.
Reply:Yes, they do expire. They are usually packaged for a particular year. The longer past the time, the fewer will germinate.

How do i plant Hollyhock flower seeds?
Since it's early yet, I start all my seedlings in the potting shed then transplant them after I know there's no more chance of frost. I just plant them in a potting mixture about 1" deep and space them about 2" apart. When it"s time to transplant them to the garden I plant them along the fence line so I can stake them if I need to. I would plant them at least 8 to 10 inches apart where they will get plenty of sunlight.
How do i plant Hollyhock flower seeds?
When I planted my Hollyhocks I started them from seeds in the house. Then I planted them in the ground after they were so big. I gave my mom the seeds from the Hollyhocks that I grew and she took them and threw them behind the milk house, and they grew. I found them an easy plant to grow.
Reply:put them in the ground and let them grow
Reply:I just threw mine in the garden last year and they came up. Don't forget that hollyhock is a biennial - they won't bloom the first year, you have to wait for the second summer to see any flowers.
Reply:Pepare a bed in the ground and scatter seeds on them. Cover seeds with a thin layer of soil. Keep this area moist and just wait for seeds to sprout.
Best time to do this is spring through summer.

My friend and i planted a bunch of flower seeds (all kinds) about a month ago. the flower bed is now filled?
with lots of green leaves and stuff but no actuall flowers yet. when should we be expecting to see flowers?
My friend and i planted a bunch of flower seeds (all kinds) about a month ago. the flower bed is now filled?
Depends on what kind of plants you put in. I do know that if you feed them too much, you will gets lots of green and not so much flowering. So, if you have fertilized them...stop and wait for the flowers. BTW...how lucky are you to be planting already...we still have snow up here in Northern NY! Good luck!
Reply:April showers bring may flowers.
Others might be in October...:~)
Reply:Depends on the season of the flower.. You need to know what seeds are what and then search them up and it will describe the bloom time.

Can budgies eat oil sun flower seeds?
My friend gave me a big bag of oil sunflower seeds can i give them to my budgies ore the are to big for them? are they good and healty?
Can budgies eat oil sun flower seeds?
Sunflower seeds are almost all fat, which means they're not very good for pet budgies. Birds like sunflower seeds for quick energy, but cage birds don't get nearly the same kind of exercise as wild birds. Whether your birds will like them is an open question, because they are quite big and may not be easy for budgie beaks to open. They may not recognize them as food. If you do try to give them some, make it only a few at a time, and keep an eye on them. Sunflower seeds definitely cannot be the staple of a budgie diet. If you want to give your birds a good treat, toss the sunflower seeds out for the wild birds and buy some millet spray. My budgies are crazy for it. =)
Reply:Give them only once in a great while as a treat. Sunflower seeds are very fattening!
Reply:It's a good idea to keep sunflower seeds OUT of your Budgies diet. Budgies seem to be more prone to obesity and fatty tumors. Sunfower seeds are very high in fat and your bird does not need them. Grains are a lower fat alternative and you should feed veggies as well. He might like a bit of fruit, but you should feed more veggies as they are more important to the diet and don't contain the amounts of natural sugars that fruits do. Pellets are another option, but you should still feed veggies if you go with a pellet diet. If you haven't started your Budgie on veggies and fruit yet, try offering some sweet variety of peas, grated carrot, and some apple or grape and fresh greens. Don't feed iceburg lettuce - it's not harmful, it is just very low in nutrients and high in water. Opt for dark leafy varieties if you want to offer lettuce. Apple and grape have high water content too, but they have more nutrients and may be helpful in introducing your Budgie to fresh produce.

How soon can I plant Dahlia, Morning Glory, Violet and mixed wild flower seeds in North Texas?
North Texas is probably zone 7 so I would suggest after April 1st. After all danger of last freeze.
How soon can I plant Dahlia, Morning Glory, Violet and mixed wild flower seeds in North Texas?
Wait until no danger of frost.
Reply:Planted yesterday in Mesquite Tex
Reply:Wit dahlias, after the last frost. With the others, you can plant them anytime. Violets take the cold well, and some of the flowers in the wild mix do also.
We live in California and have already planted most things. All are doing well, even though the nights go down to 41. The sun is the key, and we are getting 65 right now during the day, with the sun on all of the growing areas.\
Good luck

If you gather the seeds from a annual flower cant you replant those next year?
Last year I gathered lots of seeds from my flowers and I'm going to sow them this spring. They will grow and flower wont they?
If you gather the seeds from a annual flower cant you replant those next year?
You should get some. Depends on the flower.
With some flowers, all I have to do is shakes the seed pods around in late summer where I want them next year.
If you actually PLANT them - most annual seeds will need light to germinate, so sprinkle them only very lightly with soil. Just make sure they have good contact, and stay moist through their germination period.
Reply:Yes, but with a warning. If the parent was a hybrid you may not get what you expect.
Reply:Yes. But as with anytime you sow seed there will be a percentage which will not sprout so don't be surprised.
Reply:yep
Reply:I have been told that too, I do believe they will. Good luck.
Reply:It will depend on the flower. Look each one up on the internet. Some plants require striation which means subjected to cold and varying temperatures for a period of time. Chamomile is an example. It wants cold and sun for seven days in order to germinate. If you are planting outdoors look up these plants and see how much striation they might need because you might want to plant them a lot earlier than you think. Snapdragons are another good example. The seeds need to be refrigerated for three weeks prior to planting. The internet is real easy...go put How to plant (whatever) in the search engine and you will get many good sites that will give you the requirements for germination.
Reply:If your flowers were pollinated the will grow wonderfully. I like wild flowers and love to come upon them while driving the inter state.
I never fail smile at this site.
Good Luck
Reply:Sure they will. Clear plastic zip-type bag, wet paper towel, sprinkle on seeds, put in sunny south window. (You'll see which seeds are viable within a week or 2.) Transplant to peat pellets when they sprout. When they have 2 sets of mature leaves (not the seedling 1st leaves) put them out in the ground.
Reply:You bet they will!....I do it every year! I've done it with Petunias, Impatiens, Dianthus and Allysum. I even collected them off my dianthus one year and sent them to a friend in Ireland and he grew them over there! And as mentioned...they do sometimes revert to their original color...but that's ok. A flower is a flower and they are all beautiful to me. Try it...it's fun! ( I keep mine in plain white envelopes or ziplock baggies..and don't forget to label them)

What is a reliable online gardening store where I can buy really cheap Impatient (Snapweed) flower seeds?
Or what are some other really easy flowers that I can keep indoors with little sun? They need to be really easy to maintain because I've never grown flowers before.
What is a reliable online gardening store where I can buy really cheap Impatient (Snapweed) flower seeds?
www.parkseed.com
I buy seeds from them for 4 years now. Good customer service, always answer my emails.
Maybe you can buy african violets from your local nursery or Home Depot/ Lowes. They are easy to maintain just water from the bottom and never let the leaves wet.
Reply:Here are a couple of great sites I've used.
Dutch Gardens
ParkSeed
Gurney's Seed %26amp; Nursery
Spring Hill Nursery
White Flower Farm
Wayside Gardens
Yardiac (don't know if they carry impatients)
I'd recommend Park Seed. Plus they're offering a great deal right now. You can get a Lily Collection if you buy $50 in stuff. That might not fit in though with your request for "cheap". :-)
Do you do a lot of gardening purchase online or other purchases online? I do and I actually get rewards for shopping online like cash back and gift cards. It might be worth looking into if you are going to be shopping online anyway - especially for gardening stuff. There are tons of rewards sites out there. I use Memolink.com. They have quite a few gardening sites as well.
Good luck. Hope you find what you need.
Reply:well, you might be able to find them in any hardware store, nursery or garden center- they are very common in seed racks. sometimes you can even find them in the grocery store.
begonias are very easy to grow they come as a *tuber* that you just put in the soil and set in a window. and they're beautiful, too
- check burpee.com - i order form them all the time - they're good

How to cultivate flower bulb's seed? And when to plant these seeds?
Does anyone of you ever crop tulip's seeds? How do they look like by size, colors and how big is the seed bud? Last year I bought some tulips and it flowered and yielded some seed buds. But unfortunately they were all savaged by the aphides that they all withered without any seeds inside the buds. Just wonder any experienced gardener ever collects such kind of seed and how to plant them and when is the best season to plant them ( the real seeds not bulbs) in what kind of soil would be the best to them
How to cultivate flower bulb's seed? And when to plant these seeds?
theres a great website with many seeds for sale like creeping thyme, red poppy, black eyed susan seeds and many more at www.seedneeds.com
Reply:Tulip seeds are overrated unless you plan on doing your own breeding. When you plant the seed, you will lose the benefit of having genetically identical plants as with bulbs. The seed will yield unknown genetic characteristics, which again, has its uses, but is normally not desirable and quite difficult. If you must, plant the seed in well drained pH 6.5 soil in the spring. A normal potting soil will suffice. Go organic. No Miracle Gro!

Please don't get too technical i'm a garden idiot.
Novice: Best way to plant ( Flower ) seeds for good results.?
If you are planting straight in the garden you need 2 main things 1 get rid of weeds 2 make sure soild is warm enough. To gat rid of weeds put clear plastic over the site NOW. this will make weed seeds germinate and you can pull them up or chop them off. Keep the plastic on for about a month. Then don't put the seeds in until the soil is warm enough to sit on with a bare bum. You don't have to do this, although the old farmers did, just lay your hand flat on it for a few minutes and think, would I sit on that naked? if so, it is warm enough to sow your seeds. After that, check every day to see that they have not got dry if it has not rained. Also when you are pulling weeds earlier, have a good look at them, so if there are any still coming up you know what they look like. If you don't know what your flower seedlings will look like, put just a few in a flowerpot on the windowsill so you can recognise them when they come up in the garden. Also, choose easy flowers. Godetia and lobelia are easy and give loads of flowers. Good luck!
Reply:To every seed there is a rhyme and reason. If you dont have good planting instructions for each kind of seed, go to the internet search and plug in "How to plant-----whatever seed it is you have. Seeds are very particular. Some seeds require a period of temperature extremes; some will only germinate in cold; some will only germinate after a period of cold but not in light; some want cold and then light. The back of your package should have specific instructions. If not, use the old How to search. I havent found a seed yet that didnt have instructions. As for the back of the package, I have been gardening for years. I just got a major order of seeds and planted about four flats BEFORE I read the instructions. Did at least four flats wrong. So much for thinking after years of gardening that you dont need directions. Who would have thought that snapdragon seeds had to be refrigerated for three weeks before planting?
Reply:Usually the best way is to pick the method to suit the type/size of the seed.
If the seed is small to very small, sprinkle evenly on top of compost in a seed tray then just lightly cover with compost so that the seed is only as deep as it is big, i.e. if the seed is 1mm in diameter then it should be no deeper than 1mm.
If the seed is medium to small, draw a groove in the surface of the compost then sow the seed along this row then cover by pulling the compost inwards, making a slight ridge then flatten it.
If the seed is large enough to be handled individually then that is what you do: sow singly about 25mm apart.
Water enough to moisten the compost and allow to almost dry out before watering again. When they seeds have formed two proper leaves (i.e. not the seedling leaves), thin to allow proper growth, pot on and then harden off when they are big enough.
Note if you have very fine seed, it helps to mix the seed with dry silver sand before sprinkling on the compost.
If you are sowing using the row method you can reduce the amount of thinning out if you first germinate the seeds in a jar by adding water, shaking slightly to ensure the seeds are wet, drain off the water, repeat evening and morning until the seeds begin to sprout. Mix germinated seed with a non-fungicidal wallpaper paste and pipe (like icing) along the row.
Good luck and enjoy your new hobby.
Reply:What I have done in the past is to plant them shallowly in seed compost in a tray, when they have grown a little I pot them, as they get bigger I either pot on or olant in the garden, hope this helps.

In Texas what is good type soil to plant nursery caliber flower seeds?
I've tried miracle grow potting mix and it seems to have too many sticks to work well. Soil mixture goes to the bottom. What can I buy?
In Texas what is good type soil to plant nursery caliber flower seeds?
I'm not sure what you mean by 'nursery caliber' flower seeds, but it really shouldn't make a difference. You need to look for a mix specifically for seed starting - your local nurseries should carry it. Stay away from 100% peat (hard to keep moist). What are you putting the soil in?
Reply:Walmart carries a generic top soil (or potting soil for that matter) that I have had success with.

When it is a good time to plant flower seeds, after killing weeds or during ?
Normally sometime after, but follow the directions on the product that you use. You can buy products that you can use after your desirable plants are there, but you need to shield them from the poison. And I don't think it's a good idea around seeds that have been planted.
When it is a good time to plant flower seeds, after killing weeds or during ?
If you used a chemical herbicide such as Roundup then you will need to wait two weeks minimum before planting. If you just pulled them out there is no waiting.
Reply:It really doesn't matter. I would want to do it during I'm killing the weeds because when I pick out a place to plant my flower seeds, I know that a weed can pop in the place that I want to plant it so I would want to plant my seed there first before a weed. Also, I know that I don't have to come back out and plant it. So, it doesn't matter but I recommend doing it during your killing your weeds. Good luck and hope I've helped! ♥

I saw a commercial advertising some flower seeds imbeaded into a sheet or somthing what are they called?
It was like just water and a bed of flowers will grow
I saw a commercial advertising some flower seeds imbeaded into a sheet or somthing what are they called?
Hello,, I've bought these before and I didn't like them. Here there just called a bed of flowers.. You can pick out the one you want,, but be careful. Mine was so full of just wild flowers that the ones I actually picked it out for didn't even have a chance to come up. I find it alot easier to either just plant my seeds in the house and have seedlings to plant when it gets warm enough or go to a hothouse and buy them. The ones I tried like your talking about never turned out near as pretty or as full as I like. Hope this helps

I'm currently in the US. Is it legal to take flower seeds like Poppy etc to my homeland when I return?
take them anywhere you like, but in Great Britain you will be arrested at customs. Leave them there!!!!!!!!!
I'm currently in the US. Is it legal to take flower seeds like Poppy etc to my homeland when I return?
Where is your homeland? Most probably the answer is no, but you don't have to declare them. I will admit I have brought seeds back from other countries. This can be a felony in some countries. The USDA has a website that will be much more thorough in an answer. Unfortunately, this is how alot of plant diseases have crossed borders.
Reply:Depends where you are going some countries do some dont check with the airline 1st just to make sure.
Reply:It'll depend on the laws in your home country as to whether or not you'll be able to bring seeds back with you. Many countries now require a phytosanitary certificate for imports, even if the seeds are in commercial packages. Many also have lists of species that are not eligible for import under any circumstances. If you can't find information about your country's rules on the web, try calling your country's embassy for information.
The rules are not in place to keep people from having the plants they want, but to keep plant diseases and pests out of the country. Potential losses from allowing in diseased or infested plant materials can be very high, so please don't give in to the temptation to just smuggle something in, easy as that may be.
If you'd like to see the regs for importing seed INTO the US (rather than out of) here they are:
http://www.aphis.usda.gov/plant_health/p...
Most countries have similar sets of regulations, some more nit-picky, some less.

Can one buy orchid plants and flower seeds in thailand?
I want to bring back orchid plants and flower seeds. Is that allowed?if so where are they available in bankok?
Can one buy orchid plants and flower seeds in thailand?
They are available anywhere in Bangkok, even the airport sells them. You can take them out of the country but the problem is the custom regulation that you have to go through in your country of origin. Find out the quarantine laws before you depart. If it is impossible, then you can buy the same here in USA by going online.
Reply:Baby Orchids for growing - I know they have them at the Samphran Elephant Ground %26amp; Zoo (just outside Bangkok).
Sorry, I don't know the answer to whether you can bring them into your country.
Reply:You can buy them easily from markets and Chatuchak weekend market. Cost very little for seedlings and seeds. And easily packed small. Check your country localcustom rules to see if you can bring them home.
Reply:Depends on where your from, but i live in the UK and when i went you COULD NOT bring any 'flowers' into the country.
Check it out on what you can bring into the country you live in
Reply:not sure if you can bring back orchid plants %26amp; seeds but i will tell you they have cheap amazing flower markets all over bangkok. there is an entire city section of bangkok devoted to flowers. check guidebook "Lonely Planet - Bangkok". they may be able to shed light if plants/seeds can be taken home.

Unless you want everyone knowing you are planting an illegal plant, just say "plant seed". Marijuana is considered an herb, so technically you are planting herb seeds.

Reply:Yes. I had Touch-Me-Nots growing in my garden. They are prolific self seeders. I saved the seeds and then at Christmastime I put some in an envelope and attached a photo I had taken of the flowers over the summer so my neihgbor would know what they look like in bloom. I attached the envlope to a tin of cookies and took it to her. She has an amazing garden! Next summer she had Touch-Me-Nots by her mailbox :)

Can expired flower seeds, and herb seeds still be planted?
there dated 2005.
Can expired flower seeds, and herb seeds still be planted?
Put the seeds in a glass of water and let them soak over night. the ones which sink to the bottom are good, the others not and you can throw them away. The ones on the bottom are fertile.
Reply:Don't forget, though, that seeds that have been soaked overnight must promptly be planted. They have already begun their regrowth pattern by this process, and if you let them dry out again, they may be ruined for later planting. Be prepared to plant them right away! Report It

Reply:Yes you can. I have seeds dated from the 60's that I have planted and have grown better than I expected.
Reply:There should be no problem with the seeds. Most likely the yield would be less, but if they've been stored properly, they should be fine.
Reply:well.
yes you could plant them
doesnt mean they will grow anything
Reply:Yes by all means. However the germination rate will be a bit less. For example, if you have 10 seeds and planted them early, then you might get 9 plants. Now you may get 7, but its still worth a shot. You will know its value in about a week.
Reply:Go ahead and plant your seeds. Most seeds remain viable for several years past the year they were packaged for. You may have a slightly lower germination rate than if you had planted them in 2005, but the flowers will still be as beautiful and smell as sweet, and the herbs will still have just as much flavor as if they had been packaged for this year.
Good luck with your garden.
Reply:im not sure they are gonna grow, but what is it gonna hurt to throw them in the dirt if they grow great if not, no big deal
Reply:Not sure but you only after try gd luck.

How early can I start flower seeds in jiffy pots (wisconsin)?
sunflowers and shasta daisies- they will be planted outside when the weather is better...
How early can I start flower seeds in jiffy pots (wisconsin)?
You can start the shasta daisies now, but I would wait on the sunflower since it is quite a big seedling when germinated
Reply:Hmm reading spams' answer lol..in fact I already have tons of seeds going..my cantaloupes sprout out bigger than the sunflowers have..usually about 6 to 8 weeks before the last freeze is proper..tomateos about 10 weeks...You can start them now..do not use the common bagged potting soil for seedlings..it is too "dense" and compacts down to a hard substance hindering your the growth of the striving seedlings..I bought a large bag of vermiculite and perlite at home depot(about 4 feet tall but very light 16 pounds) I mix one third perlite, one third vermiculite, and one third peat mox together for a very light soil on my seeds..they retain moisture, and make a very loose medium for the seeds to emerge through..I have no less than 200 seeds already sprouted and getting ready to be planted...I take mine outside where they get natural sun as often as I can if not too cold..then when rainy and cold I put them under my indoor flourescent light to contiinue growing..A flourescent light must not be no further than about 3 to 4 inches from the top of the seedlings, or they will become "leggy" and fall over..here are a few pictures..Unfortunately I do not have a picture of the seedlings going on now..but I do have some of my basil and a few other plant pictures from an earlier date..here are some pictures of this going on and the end results..

I would start them now but be prepared to keep them warm in a green hose or something similar or else they will die if it gets to cold. Especially the sunflowers, they love the heat.
Reply:I have started both of these flowers from seed but in different ways. You can start them 4-6 weeks before your last frost date, or when the package directs. However, I find they grow much better when direct sown into the ground. Especially the sunflowers. The ones that the birds plant for me always far exceed the ones I start in pots, which tend to get leggy because it's very difficult to get enough sunlight for them unless you have a greenhouse.

Reply:Put potting soil and time-release fertilizer in the jiffies, add seed and water, place in sun. Transplant to larger pot or tray as seedlngs get bigger. Contact Burpee's website for tips.
Make sure it is after frosts before putting outside. Timing of when to start the seeds is important. You don't want giant plants in the house waiting to be put outside.
Reply:check wlth the state agricultural extension service, for the last frost date. Back up 3-6 weeks depending on the plant..
