Can budgies eat oil sun flower seeds?
Sunflower seeds are almost all fat, which means they're not very good for pet budgies. Birds like sunflower seeds for quick energy, but cage birds don't get nearly the same kind of exercise as wild birds. Whether your birds will like them is an open question, because they are quite big and may not be easy for budgie beaks to open. They may not recognize them as food. If you do try to give them some, make it only a few at a time, and keep an eye on them. Sunflower seeds definitely cannot be the staple of a budgie diet. If you want to give your birds a good treat, toss the sunflower seeds out for the wild birds and buy some millet spray. My budgies are crazy for it. =)
Reply:Give them only once in a great while as a treat. Sunflower seeds are very fattening!
Reply:It's a good idea to keep sunflower seeds OUT of your Budgies diet. Budgies seem to be more prone to obesity and fatty tumors. Sunfower seeds are very high in fat and your bird does not need them. Grains are a lower fat alternative and you should feed veggies as well. He might like a bit of fruit, but you should feed more veggies as they are more important to the diet and don't contain the amounts of natural sugars that fruits do. Pellets are another option, but you should still feed veggies if you go with a pellet diet. If you haven't started your Budgie on veggies and fruit yet, try offering some sweet variety of peas, grated carrot, and some apple or grape and fresh greens. Don't feed iceburg lettuce - it's not harmful, it is just very low in nutrients and high in water. Opt for dark leafy varieties if you want to offer lettuce. Apple and grape have high water content too, but they have more nutrients and may be helpful in introducing your Budgie to fresh produce.

Join the Yahoo Group "Feeding Feathers". You will be able to find a Budgie diet in their files under "species diets". I have my Grey on their African Grey diet. Our Avian vet is SOOO pleased with his condition.
